After a nice stint in prison, they should take 15% of whatever he makes for the rest of his life. Social Security too. Let him understand the meaning of "priceless".

Plus a few thousand hours of community service cleaning latrines in China.

"the intruder took a thumb - from a $4.5 million terracotta warrior that's part of an acclaimed exhibit on loan from China at the Franklin Institute. "

Well it's worthless now.

You can pay off your $4.5 million debt by working in the Himalayan salt mines for the rest of your life.

Archer interviewed Rohana at his family's home on Jan. 13, asking "if he had anything in his possession that he wanted to turn over to the FBI."

"And just before he left the room, Rohana "appeared to break something off the Cavalryman's left hand and put it in his left pocket," says the agent, who formerly served on the Camden High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and a unit targeting violent criminals and gang members in South Jersey"

My wife is real bad this way. She's always trying to chip something off of priceless antiquities so she can bring it home with her. I caught her with a hammer in her purse while we we visiting the Vatican one year. Last year, while visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza, I made her empty her purse before climbing up inside to the burial chamber. It's bad.

They should take that thumb and stick it right up back onto that statue while the terra-cotta edges still have the matching coarse shapes

My wife was a long term docent (and I was briefly a docent) and member at the Field Museum in Chicago and we got to go on "behind the scenes" tours all the time where we were just left to wander.  Never occured to us to steal anything, but then we aren't a$$holes

4.5 million?  Who makes up these prices?  There's thousands of them in China.  Go get another one.

Better yet, file your insurance claim, order a fake one from a factory in Guangzhou, and "profit".

We could save society some bucks if we just handed him over to the Chinese authorities.

"Is there anything you want to turn over to the FBI?"

"Like, is there a thumb up my butt? 'Cause that's where it is. Up my butt. You sure you want it back? It's been up my butt for three weeks. Where you been, anyway? Been waitin' for you here with a thumb up my butt. A four and a half million dollar Chinese thumb up my butt. Now go and get it, copper."

I hope they cut off HIS thumb if not more.

These really are priceless antiquities. When you are in Xian you can't get close to the statues. You walk around on platforms. The guide told us the only tourist allowed in the pit where they were buried was Queen Elizabeth.

We are lucky the Chinese even let them out of the country for the barbarians in Philadelphia to see.

The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits nearby Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.

We saw this exhibit in Chicago twice last year.  It never occurred to any of us - including my 7y.o. - to try and take or break anything.  It just boggles my mind how stupid and rude some people are.

I saw these when they came through my town a few years ago. Really amazing.  Each one is a total work of art in itself.

A-farking-men.

Yes, it is just a thing. Yes, living breathing humans are more important.

BUT. This is history. This is OUR history. This is a form (accidental though it is) of damnatio memoriae. Destroying the evidence of those who came before us, until we feel no connection to them. Taking away our past. Even if it's the past of a crazy-ass Emperor from a couple thou years ago, it is from our collective ancestors - humans who strive, tell stories, build monuments, and live - to us.

/You can guess my opinions on ISIS

Uh, don't the Egyptian authorities sort of wall you away in Qena for an indeterminate stay if you pull shiat like that? Maybe you should arrange a "scared straight" tour for her. OTOH, she might try to steal something from the prison while on the tour, so: bad idea.

I remember my dad buying some smuggled obsidian artifacts from his chiropractor buddy who had just returned from a Mexican vacation. They both thought it was a great yuck.

Wait till he finds out how much mercury is in it. Supposedly the emperor had a river of mercury attended by terra-cotta swans. Of course, it's leached into the soil and other things by now.

Fun fact: each warrior is apparently unique, with individual faces and gear differences. Almost like they were modeled on a real army. So 4.5 million actually seems a little low.

Good thing it wasn't Trump. He would have taken the whole statue.  There's a bunch of ignorant people in your country who don't know the value of anything, or have appreciation for most things.  This dickhead is a good example!
