You would think there might have been some sort of advanced surveillance system in place to prevent things like this.

Interesting.

Last time there was a big shooting outside an intelligence agency, it was an Islamic terrorist.

I just like the word "gopnik" and use it any chance I get as in the case here where I'm speculating the attacker was a nut brainwashed by Dmitry Peskov.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been "briefed on the shooting at Fort Meade," and the White House offers thoughts and prayers with those who have been affected, spokesperson Lindsay Walters said.

What....like, the concrete barrier?

I'm trying to imagine someone being briefed on this and, when asked for comment, literally saying "thoughts and prayers".

A security gate before another security gate maybe? Can't be too careful.

Why not?  We learn a significant amount about what our government is doing from the Russians.  Now we're even outsourcing portions of our foreign policy to them.

I once chatted with a lady who lived in the general area of Fort Meade, and while taking a cab home late
one night, the driver got lost and ended up at the entrance to the NSA.

Fortunately, said lady was coming home from her job as a stripper, and the guards were VERY friendly
and helpful.

Wrong.  So wrong.  There have been several attacks on federal and intelligence buildings since then, including a similar incident at the NSA a few years ago.

This could be a lone nutter or some Fox Newzie pushed to the limit.  Let's watch!

Not sure if racist, Russian, or ignorant, but tfa says:

But in early 2015, two people were shot at by NSA police when they disobeyed orders outside the heavily secured campus. One driver died at the scene after NSA police opened fire on a stolen sports utility vehicle. Authorities later said they had stolen a car from a man who picked them up for a party at a motel.

Surely 2001 was a more recent attack on an intelligence building.

I believe Drumpf's "thoughts & prayers" comment was an abbreviation of 'Don't interrupt me when I'm trying to putt! Dammit, ya made me miss. That's a mulligan! I award myself a three-stroke credit!'.

The only one at NSA HQ from the last few years I can think of is the shooting at the gate where some car thieves took a wrong exit off the highway, freaked out, and got shot.

Only reasonable explanation for his comment is that He missed the 2015 shooting, and/or noted that the 2015 case wasn't one involving people directly threatening/shooting at the NSA.

Huge difference between "actively shooting at" and "disobeyed orders outside".

Remember, there is no such thing as domestic terrorism, especially from right wingers.  There are just disturbed lone gunmen.

(Now watch it turn out to be something ridiculous like a black separatist.)

For those that aren't aware, the NSA section of Ft. Meade is just an exit off the main highway.  Theres lots of signs that say "DON"T GO THERE".   and "EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE< DOUBLE CHECK".  (Paraphrasing).     But the sides of the exit are completely blocked with trees... so you drive up without seeing much... (other than the signs) and it's very narrow lanes that you can't easily turn around in.    The "Gate" is Well away from the NSA campus, but it's still owned and operated by NSA security.

It's easy for people who aren't really paying attention to get off on that gate.   As article says, it happens all the time.     Petty criminals often times freak the fark out when they see armed (clearly gub'mit") guards and barriers.   There is ALSO no easy roundabout.  You WILL be stopped, you will be asked your business, and you will be politely turned around.

If you just say "whoops, wrong exit" they'll turn you around.   If you say "fark IT, WERE GETTING OUT OF HERE" your only option is to gun it forwards... and be shot.

Do not gun it forward.   They are NOT your typical lazy gate guards.

I was across the street from NSA once... and went to take a photo. I was flagged down by a guard and asked not to take any pictures. I put the camera down but informed the guard that the picture I wanted to take was exactly like the one on the cover of the local yellow Pages. I was pretty sure he didn't care because he told me if I take a picture, the next phone book I would see would be in an interrogation room.

Funny world. Stiggnit.
