No, no, no, subby - they only shoot you when THEY decide to shoot you.  Not when you want them to.  To these assholes, it's not about shooting and killing, it's completely about power.

Me: Bet she was white.

FTA: The information was scant: white woman with long, dirty-blond hair, driving a car with Florida license plates and brandishing a pistol.

Yep.  Bets on the outcome being different if she were a minority...?

There's a story from earlier today about how a cop DIDN'T shoot the black guy who had a gun, so he got fired and then got $175K for wrongful termination. Of course, another cop on the scene took care of business. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/02/13/west-virginia-officer-fired-after-refusing-to-shoot-man-with-gun-settles-lawsuit-for-175000.html

All those brown people saying those things and taking those knees, they only heard "look out for police! Be safe everyone!"

Yeah. This story about this white lady having a *lot* of leeway is not surprising. But it sure would be great if its peaceful resolution could have some impact on the way police approach any situation, ever. (Sit back, get a drone, talk it out.)

It would, indeed. Just too bad the pigs look at the 'browns' as little more than target practice.

lrn2reading-comprehension. also lrn2logic.

Nobody is wishing that the cops would have shot her just for being white. Everyone is saying that her being white is why the cops did not shoot her, and that if she were not white the cops would have taken a "shoot first and maybe ask questions later" approach to dealing with her.

Yeah, seeing this story right after seeing the story about the cop getting fired because he didn't shoot a black guy kinda makes the cops look more racist than ever.

Agreed.  When people who complain about bad cops blame the military training/experience or call it 'militaristic', I point out what I feel is a lack of logic in that assessment.  By and large I believe it's the opposite.  I was the CO of a military police unit several years ago.  Yes they do the war thing as necessary but also at bases all over the world they are the police force.  That includes drunken belligerent people---it's the military after all, protesters at the gate,  and in general a high incidence rate of whackos, mentally ill, suicidal people, etc etc.  Military bases tend to attract the crazies.  There are a few fundamental differences between the MPs and 'civilian' police.
1. The military trains relentlessly.  That includes de-escalation, mental health, etc. And this training is consistent across the entire globe.  Training regular police get has often struck me as police academy then hey you're good and not enough money is spent on training because of many reasons.  Not only the direct cost but training hours reduce the number of available hours per cop which then would require more headcount on a police force to accommodate for the downtime.  Additionally the training in my opinion does not put enough emphasis on the non-shooting part of the job.
2. Part of that military training is relentless training on progression of use of force.  Pointing your gun at someone when you are in the military is not step 1 of that progression.
3. It is important to realize the 'target' of the military policeman is a fellow soldier or sailor.  This serves to cause the 'offender' to be viewed as a person and not a criminal by default.   Or perhaps the offender is one of 'the locals' in a foreign country so every interaction risks an international incident.

My basic argument is that militaristic does not mean what some people think it means.

There are obviously many of the same alpha male, rock head bullies in the military which is one of the reasons why there is so much training.

I would like to see follow-ups to stories like this where cops save the life of a suicidal person. You see these feel-good stories sometimes where a life is saved, but did they get the help they needed? Were they able to resolve some issues that lead them to wanting to take their own lives? Now this poor woman's name has been published in the paper too. That can't be helpful.

/sorry, don't mean to threadjack, you guys can go back to talking about race, which wasn't mentioned in TFA at all

It's pretty sad that a person can get to a point in their life where they ask, beg, the cops to shoot her.  No doubt her problems were of her own making but that does not negate the fact that this woman needs help badly.  Hope she gets that help.
