Came to say this, but the best garbage plates in Rochester come from a little place on Monroe ave called Dogtown.

I could have put that away when I was a 300 pounder.  Not now, though.

When my youngest was 4 or 5 years old he wanted to make a new spaghetti concoction. It was his two favorite things put together - plain spaghetti with cake frosting on top. He only ate two bites and never asked for it again.

The hell is up with that?

I have Philippine neighbors who - for some reason - think the missus and I are "starving white people in need of a feeding."  They are constantly bringing Filipino dishes over for us and almost every one of them are so packed with sugar as to be almost inedible.

Meanwhile, they are probably the healthiest people on the block...

Hey subs? "Hamburger" in Japan doesn't really get even close to what we have over here. Ours are little rubber hockey pucks, theirs are more like a flattened meatloaf that's flattened out and far more flavorful. Also goes by the name hamburger steak.

Hmm.... I could see fried eggs on a nice spicy bolognese being damn good. I'll have to try that sometime.

This dish, I'd probably try a few bites but I don't know if I'd be down for eating a whole meal of it.

I actually was a little surprised to find it came from Japan. I lived there once. What you should know about Japan is it's like a bunch of tiny different countries strung tightly and closely together in just a few islands (which I guess is not that different from most countries). You might think "Ok this is the Japanese people," but what you see in Sapporo is very different from Shibuya which is very different from Nagoya which is very different from Kyoto, etc.

/spending most of your youth in Japan means never having a home to go back to
//wish I could go back :c
//it was like this:

Filipino cuisine emphasizes the four tastes: sweet, salty, sour or bitter (umami hasn't really made it into the list yet.) So Westerners are surprised by Filipino versions of foods that aren't typically sweet, being sweet: spaghetti, potato salad, macaroni salad.

None of the Filipino spaghetti I've had has evaporated milk: just tomato sauce, ground beef, hot dog slices and grated cheese. It tastes something like Chef Boy-ar-dee. Their hot dogs are actually pretty good and smokey, so they add a nice contrast to the sweet sauce.

I'm Filipino and I'm wincing reading about this food.

Yeah, I see Filipino spaghetti on occasion, but I think it's sort of gross.  I liked it as a kid but kids have crap taste and now I won't touch that stuff. There are several much better noodle dishes in Filipino cuisine... they tend to be the sort of Chinese noodle type dishes.
