The U.S. has no evidence to confirm reports from aid groups and others that the Syrian government has used the deadly chemical sarin on its citizens, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday...

...Mattis says it is clear that Assad's government has weaponized and used chlorine gas in the Syrian civil war.

Why would Iranians label their weapons in English?  Serious question.

He has no evidence they used sarin, specifically. It's established by now that they have used chemical weapons. TFA mentions chlorine. This is not in serious dispute.

From diving into Twitter, apparently a lot of the chemical stuff is German in origin; it was apparently obtained through dubious means to get it in the hands of the Syrians (which likely means Russian assistance).

Neither sarin or chemical weapons.  He was winning against the rebels.  Absolutely zero reason to use banned chemical weapons as it would galvanize the international community against him at the worst time.

Do I believe Assad WOULD use gas or banned weapons to accomplish his goals?  Yep.  He's a monster.  But not an idiot.  This stank of the US desperately trying to spin it.

I called bs on Sarin. Mostly because I saw the video where the guy says there's a smell.

He could have used rudimentary chlorine gas or phosphate, or a bomb really could have hit a fertilizer dump/terrorist weapons factory.

Excellent refutation of his points. I'm convinced!

Obama and Kerry pushed HARD for a Syrian war after this. A lot of people who were paying attention, and were old enough to remember the flustercuck that was Iraq, wanted more evidence to counter Jethroe's points, and also wanted congressional, not presidential, declaration of war.

Conveniently they got their Syrian war with ISIS about a year later. A legitimate foe and target to attack, but it still didn't get a congressional declaration of war. And yes, I think when you drop bombs on people, it's war.

Where did you see that specific figure?

Either way, there's a substantial difference between a prediction/warning being made in order to send a political message, and the actual, official findings of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (as one example) on events that have already happened.

Not sure you want to be defending the Assad apologist here, this one is pretty cut-and-dry

Given that some of Assad's rebel groups included Al Qaeda and the precursors to ISIS, it's POSSIBLE that the rebel groups were not saints and staged the attack. It's not denying the attack took place - it's saying that Assad had a lot more to lose and less to gain than the rebels did. I'm not saying the rebels DID do this, that Assad is innocent, only that it would be nice to get evidence that Assad did do the deed before toppling a regime. Iraq was so nice, we were going to do it twice!
