Kellogg's makes Girl Scout cookies these days (then again, they also make Keebler and Famous Amos cookies these days, as part of their secret plot to rule the world by taking over all cookie making, everywhere)

I tried some Keebler knock-off Caramel Dee-Lites.

They weren't as good as the real stuff.

Huh. I moved from Little Brownie Bakers territory to ABC Bakers territory. THIS explains why the thin mints here have just not enamored me as much..

Did Girl Scout ever actually sell cookies door-to-door? I'm 65 and I've never seen it happen.

2018-02-12 09:19:46 PM
I found out recently that ABC Bakers uses milk/dairy in fewer varieties than Little Brownie does, and therefore are in demand with the vegans. And people with dairy allergies. Not that either applies to me, but hey, cookies for all.

My mom was a troop leader, or whatever, when my sister was a scout back in the 70s. We had about one million boxes of those cookies in our house awaiting dispersion to the other scouts for delivery. Peanut butter patties and thin mint were the only cookies that mattered. Those nutter-butter and other generic cookies didn't matter.

i think the ...................blah, overodsose

I once read a satirical newspaper piece written from the perspective of a fictitious girl scout ruthlessly preying upon fat people with her cookies the way dope pushers prey upon junkies. It was a rather good read. I kind of wish I could find it again.

natazha: Did Girl Scout ever actually sell cookies door-to-door? I'm 65 and I've never seen it happen.

I did, as a kid. And we had a girl scout down the block knocking on our door selling us cookies before we had our very own girl scout. And now our girl scout goes door to door. But kids are pretty slow going door to door so unless you're within a block or two of their house, chances are you won't ever get a knock. It's just easier to sell in front of a store otherwise.

Where in the world do you live? They were thick in AR/MO/OK in the 70s. "Write your name and order on this sheet and your cookies will be here in 4-6 weeks, sir/mam".

That's why we had a million boxes of cookies in our living room.

I used to work for a large bakery (Interbake Foods) that originally made their own brand (FFV, Famous Foods of Virginia) of cookies & crackers plus contract baking for almost every cookie or cracker company out there. We made the Thin Mints for about a year, horrible things. The smell of the mint filling at 5 in the morning was vomit inducing for a lot of the workers (especially if you had a hangover).

I didn't know the recipes were actually different.  I live close enough to a bakery border that some years we get samoas, some years we get caramel d'lights...

God bless those workers for what they do. I'm not much for sweets on a day-to-day basis, but I'll be damned if I don't go mano e mano with a box of Thin Mints and a half gallon of milk once a year.

That's the ideal way to enjoy them, by the way. Rarely and in utter excess. I could have them more frequently in lower quantities, but it wouldn't be the same. I could binge on a more regular basis, but I'd burn out. No, I say. The best way and frequency to eat Thin Mints is to eat an entire box with a half gallon of milk one time per year. Swap out milk for white Russians if you must really indulge that year.

I'm a former leader in Houston. Our cookies were delivered in 18-wheelers at Sam Houston Race Park. The troop cookie moms would just drive down the line of semis in their SUVs/pickups with their order confirmations & they'd load you up & off you'd go. Easy peasy. Cookies are big business.

The local grocer carries ShurFine's off-brand Thin Mints. I pretty much always have a package hiding in the freezer.

Yup, they're pretty darn good. I have intentionally avoided having them one right after the other for fear I might discover one to be inferior and ruin the illusion that I've beaten the system.
