I love both portraits. I love that they are artsy and fresh to my eye. If we're supposed to be exact images of what they looked like, they would just use photographs for the official portraits.

I like it. Honestly, I like it better than Barack's portrait.

As I have stated elsewhere, it looks to me like a more understated cross between Gustav Klimt's portrate of Adele Bloch Bauer and maybe Paul Gauguin's Woman with Mango.

Both paintings are quite nice.  But while I can look at his portrait and know who I"m looking at.  If I didn't know it was supposed to be Michelle, I wouldn't know it's her.

Subby should listen to Amy Sherald talk about her choice of gray for the skin tone of Blacks. Sometimes simplicity can convey quite a lot.

The resolution of the pictures in TFA is not very good. Here's the best I could find during my break. I cropped them down to just the paintings themselves, at least what's unobscured.

I actually saw it posted on a watch blog. I'm not that eagle-eyed.

They also have a fascinating (to me, anyway) history of presidential watches as well.

In the 80s I attended a private school for half a year in high school. The other students came from very wealthy families, but were mostly fairly decent human beings. Mostly.

I asked one of my classmates what time it was. No exaggeration, what he said was:
"Let me look at one of my many Rolex watches. This one cost $5,000, and I have another one that cost $15,000 but my mom won't let me wear my $30,000 Rolex to school because it has diamonds, emeralds and rubies on it."
"So... what time did you say it was?"

The tradition is in the portrait, so that's why they don't use a photo, but I think "official" ones should focus on resemblance for the sake of historical accuracy.

Nothing wrong with artistic licence, but I would personally - only my own irrelevant opinion -  prefer that it be reserved for other renderings.

The second link looks like a really cool read. Thank you for that.

The painting of him is good, but those leaves are ridiculous.  The background shouldn't overtake the subject matter.  As far as hers, the artist should be embarrassed.  That is a washed out mess.

I love the subtle racism of the nappier-than-normal hair and body language. He looks like a house ((servant)) playing fiddle for his master. it's disgusting.

Barack looks like Fred Armisen and Michelle, well, what the fark is that? Guarantee some female black activist blogger will post about her looking too white or something.

You have 7 or more different types of flower with only two different types of leaf species supporting them. The artist is suggesting someone came by and stuck in the the other flowers as a prop.
And there is no drop shadow of the the chair and Obama on the leaves and base.

That means the artist is suggesting he is just floating in front of this fictitious plant.
Aint nobody got time for that.

Hendawg: Is this Barack sitting in front of the ivy in left center at Wrigley?  I thought he was a Sox fan?

That is what I thought it was too, it apparently is supposed to be some Hawaiian flower/ivy, one of the flowers is supposed to be the official flower of Chicago though.

Is that a marijuana bush behind Obama?

2018-02-12 08:13:46 PM
If you have never been, the Presidential portrait gallery in DC is rather cool to walk through. I guess this will replace the sign about how Obama's is arriving. I wonder if they'll keep the pencil sketches that were posted there. Overall, I rather enjoy his but not a fan of the style in Michelle's, similar to how I don't like JFK's that was posted up thread.

There are a good number of PhotoShop filters that could have tuned a photo into a painting, at much less time and fuss.  And it would look like who it looked like.

And you can have it printed on canvas at the Costco.

2018-02-12 08:17:52 PM
It's a fine enough painting, but it just doesn't look like her.  Part of it may be the skin tone - the unrelieved gray obscures the depth of her face.

2018-02-12 08:20:28 PM
The Obamas' time in the white house was unlike anything that had gone before for many. many reasons, like Michelle being the first descendant of slaves to live there - a house that slaves built.
Their portraits should reflect their time and this difference. It's the 21st century.

And if you look at those, especially Michelle Obama's portrait, you can see that there is more detail than when you see the washed-out images from the other articles.
