That sank into the ocean.

Raise some money to buy insurance next time.

Sheesh.

Perhaps Keelboat courses and navigation/chart reading skills should be at the top of their priorities.

A 28' 50 year old coastal sail boat with original sails  crewed by 2 people that cannot even make it out of a well marked channel. The sinking saved their lives.

At least there's no kids involved. Several years ago I read an article about a couple of fundy sovereign citizen nutjobs who bought a boat, packed their 4 kids and planned to sail to some tiny island in the middle of nowhere who had to be rescued when their boat sank. And they were talking about how afraid they were of Obama being president and they were gonna try again.

Sorry, it was going 2 knots (2.3mph) and STILL sank?

You were NEVAH gonna make it around the world. Be glad you were close enough to shore to be rescued.

Falsely attributed to him, but regardless, this is only the second time. The people are morons, they aren't yet insane. Giving up after one time is just farking lazy.

I'll hang on to my money and support the crowdfunding of the next rescue mission instead.

I'm OK with this one one condition: when the next boat sinks, they have to go down with it. None of this namby-pamby fleeing for their lives shiat. But out of mercy, I will permit the dog to have a life-preserver.

It's all in how you market it. If their pitch was "Bet me $10 that we won't sink another boat and kill ourselves," I might take them up on it.

Leave the dog behind and go out and risk your own lives. The dog is innocent and doesn't deserve to drown die to your incompetence.

If it makes you feel any better, the dog is too small for sharks to mistake for a seal. He just has to worry about octopi, squids, killer whales (they kill just about anything), tuna, barracuda and catfish the size of city busses....

Others have criticized them for not having insurance,

Kinda my thought, especially when it is everything you own. But then when everything you own is $10k...
Still, I have heard that it is pretty cheap.

heh, if I was a millionaire I would buy them a new boat and pay for lessons and say 'try it again', just to see if they could, then godspeed and have fun and don't have to eat one another.

I'm picturing a group of half drunk island dwelling rich dudes, sitting around a card table on poker night, betting on where or when this couple dies at sea if they're somehow able to fix their boat.

2018-02-12 07:11:46 PM
The worst part is that this couple admitted that they had absolutely *NO* experience with sailing prior to buying the boat.  You'd at least think they'd either take lessons, buy a small sailboat and learn from that first before trying to sail around the world.

Also... with only $10k to their name, how did they plan on taking care of themselves and their boat?  I know it's only a sailboat and yacht, but the axiom traditionally is anything that costs $1 for a car costs $2 for a boat and $10 for an airplane.

2018-02-12 07:12:13 PM
Thats a hard 26.

I've been sailing since 1969.  I have yet to sink a ship.  I've bottomed out a few times but always at low speed because I go awfully slow when I'm unsure of the waters so it's never been a big deal.  Tearing off an entire fixed keel from a displacement yacht like they did takes a serious dedicated effort.

But I'm new to this angle.  Where do I sign up to get a new boat after trashing one in two days?  I didn't know it was that easy.

2018-02-12 07:17:58 PM
Maybe get a depthfinder and some sunscreen next time, yeah?

You should considering letting the couple have your Fark handle.

The best part is, they're a male and a female.

These two are probably gonna breed at some point soon...

you , people i get you like boats , hey i like boats too , but don't you think that if Lord Poseidon smacks your boat down you ought to stay out of the seas and on dry land?

2018-02-12 07:21:17 PM
Here's an even better perspective on these two clowns, along with a prize-winning quote:

"How can we live our lives when we're working most of the day and you have to pay so much just to live?" Walsh said.

Still, if they've already raised $13k, I guess the joke is on us.

Learn to sail on sunfish or j12 there is several good schools. Learning onboard is a good way to learn if someone knows what they are doing. Took a 1st time sailor on the inside passage and by the time we got home she could run the boat. She learned what reef the sails now means and other things that just go wrong that need attention.

I'd pay $3.50 not to see that.

Oh god, that's how they raised so much money.

Mola mola are big enough, but I don't think you can put a mast on one.

Name of the boat Lagniappe, it means a little something extra in Lousiana, and the frenchified the word.

However, it came from Latin America, La Napa is word from the tribes in South America meaning a little something extra from native tribes.
