was walking across the Brooklyn bridge into Manhattan last summer. going the other way was a 20-something parody of a hipster: woolen waistcoat, waxed mustache, wool breeches, and smoking a pipe. I assumed he was like a Disney or Colonial Williamsburg actor going to some job in Dumbo.

Not at all!  Hage has deployed the discerning bricoleur sensibility in numerous high-end residential projects. With every commission, he finds a way to highlight a space's patina, with a genuine interest in the stories of its former inhabitants. Nicks, scratches and imperfections are virtues to be preserved not sandblasted.

My aunt threw away my granddad's moth-eaten moose head. I was so bummed when I called to ask for it.
