Imma let you finish but if you want to see people shooting in a snowscape this weekend, then Chicago is the top destination

Nah. While they do alot of shootings in Chicago they're shiat shots. You always hear shiat like 59 shot, 8 killed. Pretty sure these guys are better shots and I don't want to get hit by a 50 caliber lead ball.

Muzzleloaders. Single shot, open sights. In New York state "primitive" is a special big game season all its own.

It's done on snowshoes instead of cross-country skis, and you have to use a muzzleloader.

The sport was "invented" over 20 years ago as a sort-of commemoration of the Battle on Snowshoes (1758).  Like the modern biathlon, it's a timed event.  However, besides the changes in equipment, there are some other differences.  In the modern version, you have to ski a penalty lap for every shot you miss.  In primitive biathlon, you get five minutes subtracted from your time for each hit.

In this particular event, you shoot twice at 3 target stations along the course, and you shoot 3 shots at the final, fourth shooting station.

It's hard to strike a good balance between hauling ass through the woods, and maintaining a pace where you aren't so winded that you can't shoot accurately.  There *ARE* people who can run the entire course and shoot "clean" or nearly so, but I'm not one of them.  Those guys end up with negative times (lowest time wins).  I'm generally happy if I'm middle of the pack, and I have gotten up into the upper 1/3rd before.

I read it as "Punitive" Biathlon and my first thought was that capital punishment has really blossomed under the Trump administration.

You walk instead of using skis, and throw rocks at the target, I think.

I use flintlocks, but percussion guns are also allowed.  There is a separate division for modern, scoped inline muzzleloaders.

One guy always brings a matchlock, which is a hoot.

Actually, no, it isn't.  There is a muzzleloader season in NYS but no specific season where only traditional muzzleloaders are allowed.  You can use a modern inline scoped muzzleloader.

I went primitive nearly two decades ago now because hunting with modern gear was getting too easy.  Some people up the difficulty by looking for bigger and bigger trophies, I upped by making it harder to get that doe or yearling buck.
