And Trump even biatches about having democrats vote for the bill.  He's not even hiding the fact that he wants total single-party rule.

I guess DACA recipients should start packing and brushing up on their Spanish. They're farked now.  Trump isn't going to negotiate at all.  Even with the budget, he's pissed the Democrats got funding for anything non-military.  No way is he going to negotiate his anti-immigration stuff to get DACA through.

The problem was that Americans don't want to shut down the government to protect DREAMers, but they do want to protect DREAMers, and a lot of House Republicans want black vans to round up all the undesireables and dump them in the desert over the border.

And guess who controls the legislative agenda in the House of Represenatives.

The fate of the DREAMers were sealed when Trump won the Presidency. The only question we're asking is that which hostage is going to end up shot (if not all of them) once this standoff is over, because the standing 'compromise' is to hamstring legal immigration for everyone (darker than cream-skin tone) in exchange for nominal legal status for the DREAMers. You know, because Republicans and all that jazz.

Correct.

"Fight me."
Okay.
"I'm going to turn around and close my eyes."
And then we fight?
"No, you can start swinging right away."
But then you're going to turn around and hit me back?
"Nope. You can just go to town."

At least everyone is finally realizing neither party cares about DREAMers. Pelosi's 8 hour speech was just political grandstanding. Schumer knew McConnell's word was worthless because Paul Ryan was never going to bring the DREAMer issue up for debate in the House. Democrats just rolled over and took it. The GOP might be a fractured party, but there is zero unity between Democrats. Congressional Dems could have stood together and pushed harder, but in the end, DACA was just political theater to keep minorities voting Democrat. Both parties have decided only rich, white Americans count in this country.

DREAMers better use these last couple of weeks to start securing housing in another country. No reason to waste anymore time. Enjoy the deportations. At least those "massive" tax cuts are starting to affect pay checks.

The problem is that most Americans are smart enough to a) know the difference between a productive member of society who may have come to this country in an unconventional manner and b) know that every little goddamn thing doesn't need to be elevated to the level of a constitutional crisis.

Exactly. The fact is the only thing that can fix this is a veto overide (not happening).

I can't blame the American peopel here-  having these young people deported over such a trivial matter is rediculous. But we're asking several hundred thousand people to take a hit of unknown length for several ten thousand people.

The idea that the Democrats didn't fight hard enough just doesn't hold water - they had zero cards. All being fair, they did better than can be expected. THey drew conessions to discuss the issue and they held off most of Trump's stupidest plans.

What the left usually forgets is how much the ignorant right HATES immigrants. All immigrants. They can lie and say they want it done "legally" but as we've seen, they want heavy caps on that too. They hate immigrants, period. Especially brown ones. And they know if they give even a mild concession (say, letting a 24 year old who has lived in the US for 23 years citizenship) will earn them a riot from their own side. So they can't let the issue go.

The democrats can die on this hill, but it will not fix the situation - democrats will still lose the fight. That's a given at this point.

The real question: will people who support the dems forgive the fact that they could'nt win? If people who lean dem will abandon them for not being able to fix an intractable problem with heavy racial and nationalistic overtones as the minority party in both without the Presidency, then the Democrats are well and truly dead.

This issue is big, complicated and filled with lots of nuance and it's easy to derail with some jingoism - in other words, a perfect issue for republicans to run against, and the democrats tried and failed. So it's up to those who are against republicans if they're gonna let this let the republicans become more entrenched, or if they'll work toward fixing the issue long-term.

We know the answer, sadly, the people will be the ones folding on the democrats.

I defended democrats last shut down saying they had lost nothing except to remove CHIP from the republican hostage bag.
I thought they had a good case to demand and get action on DACA from the republicans when the cr ran out or lock up the government while showing the republicans to be faithless lying scum.

Instead I get this. No wonder people think liberals are pussies if this is all the fight democratic legislators can manage. I have seen more fortitude from my dog facing the vaccum cleaner.

Shameful display democrats you idiots.  Never miss a chance to snatch  defeat do you?

I thought that was a bit over the line. It's fine to make fun of Paul's encounter in a Fark thread, but aren't we supposed to have an element of decorum in Congress? I despise Scalise (my home state no less) but I'd never say anything like that.
