Joe O'Gorman, who has a business nearby, said the train "whizzes by like a missile," and he's distressed at the lack of warning signs. "Do you see any warnings here telling people a missile is coming through here at 79 mph?" he asked.

It's true; when you think about it, apart from the flashing red lights, dinging bells, 120-decibel train horn, no-trespassing signs at common points of entry, rough grade crossings, and the obvious presence of long, straight train tracks that hint at a mechanism optimized for speed and efficiency at the cost of stopping distance and maneuverability... why, there's practically no warning at all.

Um, Joe?

On Jan. 17, a train killed Jeffrey D. King while he rode his bicycle in the 100 block of the Florida East Coast Railway tracks on Ocean Avenue. The arms were down on the gates, but police said the 51-year-old man tried to beat the approaching train.
Less than a week earlier, Melissa Lavell, 32, was killed by a train in the 600 block of the FEC tracks. She ducked under the gates and was trying to cross the tracks when she was struck, officials said.

Maybe your stupid farking friends and neighbors just need to learn to farking pay attention to the goddamn WARNING GATES.

Location, location, location.
Placement, placement, placement.
As in real estate and in armed combat, being hit by a train and surviving probably depends on exactly where you are at the relevant moment.

So much THIS!! Trains have been around since the early 1800s. Almost as long as we have been a nation. If you or your crotch fruit haven't learned by now to "LOOK OUT FOR THE CARS" you need to be removed from the gene pool.

I live in the path of the future Brightline fiasco. Every country and city has been fighting it in every way they can. I'm almost convinced some ultra wealthy person, or group who is all into "shoo the choo choo" is paying off homeless or mentally ill people to cause enough incidents that they can legally kill it because of safety.

Congrats, Florida! At this rate, you'll be following the Caltrain Model (TM) in no time. Increased fares to pay for security fencing along the entire length of track at grade, and posting full-time guards at road crossings.

One of the people who was killed trying to beat the train was a 32 y.o. lady named Lavell, who judging by her rap sheet, was trying hard for "florida woman"...

There is a fear that public transport will bring "those people" into town.

So, here's the actual problem.  This line had been used for freight traffic (Florida East Coast) for years with large, slow moving trains only.  Brightline have leased the tracks to put high speed passenger traffic between Miami and Cocoa, and eventually Orlando.  Clearly when you live in Florida, change management is not your forte, so understanding the difference between 35mph and 125mph is not going to be easy.

So that would be, as the NTSB will say, the root cause.  The real reason is of course, all Floridians have the IQ of a daffodil and truly deserve to die in ever bizarre and painful ways.

Well, the speed thing is not really what happened here, this guy apparently decided that there was enough clearance under the train that he could lie down between the rails and not get hit.  He was wrong about that.

So it's more the IQ of a daffodil thing going on.

In Chicago, and IL; pedestrians have the right of way even if cars are turning left.

Got another suicide by train today..  walking on the tracks listening to music with earphones.  Need to put a capture device on the front of the trains that will hold the bodies.. dump it every few days and collect a bounty for disposing of stupidity..  Darwin has been rather busy lately, seems many folks want an introduction and get it.. sorry for the families of these morons, but you lost nothing and saved future expenses.

Right of way does not overrule the laws of physics.

There were two cars on the road and she had to cross in front of it instead of waiting three seconds for when it would be completely safe, but yeah, they have the right of way, and its farking wrong.

Stop, look, listen. Even my farking dog figured that out after she got hit by a car once.

To be fair, the beg buttons rarely work, and when they do, the time until you get a favorable light tends to be far longer than the wait times for motorists. Maybe turn that trend on it's head to improve safety.
