That's just bizarre. Is it filters? They use a lot of color filters. But everything seems Mars colored. It's actually pretty beige and desert-like. Then suddenly alien black death tendrils. WTF?

CrazyCurt: That's just bizarre

shows streaks forming on slopes when dust cascades downhill

So the article is saying that unlike, say, a snow avalanche where a massive line of snow breaks free from a slope, the cascade here starts at the top as a tiny thread then scours the hillside as it comes down and leaves no trace of an accumulation of dust at the bottom where it comes to rest.  The article says the picture resolves features as fine as a yard across.

/I guess I'm just not seeing it

Oh come on.  Are we causing Mars warming  now too?  Are our rovers secretly rollin' coal?

Wow.  Now there is an unlikely reference.

I watched the entire first season of the series.  Then I couldn't watch any more.  Amazon Prime only allowed so much. But I loved the show.  I thought it was AWESOME!!  So I started downloading the books.  I'm on the 5th one now.

I tried to once again revisit the TV series after reading the books...  I can't watch the show any more.  It's absolutely terrible in comparison.

The show is really good for a ScyFy adaptation.  Given their format there was only so far they could have gone.

The books are phenomenal though.  Would have made a great big screen trilogy.

The first thing I liked about the series was that the physics for everything were way more "real world science" like than we are normally used to.  Like, no artificial gravity, no faster than light travel.  It's all big lumbering ships that need to burn rockets to get here and there, and spin around to slow down.

btw:  Did you know that the series is a sequel to The Martian?  It all takes place in the same universe.

Anyway...  The books paint a very vivid picture of things.  Things that really could not be done visually with the budget of a TV show on the SciFi Channel.  The corners they have to cut are necessary. And I get that.  But it's SUCH a departure from the books anymore, that I just can't enjoy it.   The books, in their awesomeness, ruined the TV show for me.

They have these black areas near the South Pole in the spring. Scientists say it's dust and "exhaust" from CO2 eruptions.

I think it's bacterial blooms.

Barfmaker: North is up.

I knew a cartographer who used to say that all the time.

My 4th grade teacher was one of those people. No idea why. but she always made the class say "north is up" and then point up in the air.
I pointed to where actual north was and reminded her that north being "up" depended entirely on the fact that your map was designed with north to be at the head of the page and that you were holding your map both correctly and vertically. I made her very angry very frequently because she had a horrible temper.
This was the same lady that would do things like leave us lined up outside after recess, in the snow, while staring at us from inside at the window, because we were too loud that morning and she just wanted her own quiet time.

Good lord I think we had the same 4th grade teacher.

My buddy used to say it as a joke.

But they're written by different people?   What's the point of saying it's in "the same universe" when both are dealing with humans in their own solar system, but they're hundreds of years apart and written by different people?

Well, upon further research...  The first time I read about the Expanse series, it was clearly stated that due to a ship being named Mark Watney, they were making reference to The Martian, because they are in the same universe.

Now I go back an read again, and find out that the authors only said that as a joke.  They are just fans.  And the Mark Watney reference was a nod to The Martian, and nothing more.

Consider me the bringer of bad information.  And consider me disappointed, because I thought that was pretty sensible...
