He's wearing a Mummers style costume.

Mummers are a philly tradition. Every New Year's Day there's the Mummers parade. They're groups of people who create thematic costumes and play instruments/dance/whatever else they feel like.

Think of it as an independent group of color guards and marching bands but with some tweaks

Nah. The problem with the Mummers is a long tradition of black/red/yellow face. Blackface was banned in the 60's and it's still a problem. It's a really neat parade with a lot of sequins and ruffles and time and effort and spectacle with some really ugly traditions that the clubs have been very slow in rooting out.

Is it unreasonable to assume that since he bought the costume and FTA loves it he may very well participate in such a parade? Especially since he's a huge celebrity in the city?

But go ahead and pedant, pedant, pedant pedant pedant pedant pedaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant.

He didn't buy it. He borrowed it. The Mummer's Parade is a collection of very well organized, well established clubs. They work all year on their acts, and Kelce has a full time job that requires a lot of travel. Yes, your assumptions are unreasonable.

Wow you're bad at reading.

The Mummers aren't racist "per se".

The people who founded the clubs come from generations of Irish and Italian immigrants. So there is no doubt there have been racist members in the past and there have been routines from groups of the mummers (There are many many different, independent groups) that were borderline racist.

But being a mummer or enjoying the mummers day parade does not make you a racist.

The mummers day parade is something distinctly Philadelphia, and that is what Kelce was tapping in to.

Eh, they may get him to participate next year but I don't think Kelce has shown any affinity for the parade before donning the costume.  It was more of a funny thing to do to show his bond with the fans.

As for the Mummers parade itself, I'm not a fan personally, but I may have painted it with too broad a stroke.  It's just had a series of assholeishness over the years that tarnish the image.

Don't forget that there is also a German immigrant contingent also.... by wife's uncle is 4th generation mummer string band member.

I never understood the entire thing, but people are going to do what they like based on family tradition.... much like the shrines parades.  I talk to shriners all the time and they think its the greatest thing in the world and they do great things with the money they raise... but clowns?   not for me.

That makes sense. I grew up in Chicago and always loved the St. Patrick's Day parade. Been away from the city for some time and from my understanding it got too big and assholes ruined it. I think it's been massively scaled down recently due to that.

Thanks for the historical background. Wife is German/Irish so I'm sure she'll get a kick as well.

Off topic, but Philly generally doesn't give a shiat about that statue at all.  The statue (and accompanying steps) are tourist magnets.

They still tend to embrace the Rocky thing for the whole underdog mentality, but that's it.  But the statue/character worship narrative is driven by outsiders and the media.

That's good to know. I think I got the impression because we had a thread here right before the Superb Owl where I think some Vikings fans were attacked for draping it with purple and gold or some such. One of the Philly farkers came in and was shooting off about, "That's what you get when you fark with the statue of Rocky! What'd you expect?" So I guess there I go painting with a brush that might be a tad too large.

Philly fan being an asshole???

I need my fainting couch!!

In my time living here (only a few years) the only decent Philly fans are Union, 76ers, Flyers, Phillies, Eagles in that order. Flyers would be higher but the last game i was at they told some fans that came down in from Vancouver to get back to Canada or Trump will build a wall to keep them there. The Canuck fans replied, " can you please throw us over the border at least, that way our copays are covered. We don't want some 3rd world health care taking care of us. Thank you."

I had to explain it to Flyers fan that they just got burned.

The costume was from an old parade in 2008.
Racism may exist, but its not a tenet of the parade.  If you're not from the Philly area you probably have no idea how huge the thing is - it goes on for several hours and has literally thousands of people in it. Themes can be anything. Lots of big dudes in drag... I had it on this New Year's Day I had it on in the background (like I said it goes on ALL day)-  and there was a Lego themed group that built a wall and then had a lego Trump come and complain and get locked away. I'm sure there have been pro Trump skits too.
The point is it is too big and too old to be defined as one thing. It's mostly just a crazy parade with a ton of spectacle on new years day.
Kelces speech was a thing of beauty. It was carried live on NBC, Fbombs included.
