ox45tallboy: When do they ski around and shoot things?

During the Biathlon

It's like baseball spring training: pitchers and catchers report early but nobody pays attention until everybody else is there

Even without seeing it, I can safely say:

Shut up, stupid commentators, with thre obnoxious play-by-play of the artistic presentation. Just let us watch it in peace for five seconds, would you?

What a joke.

If you're just going to jump into competing anyway, why bother with the pomp and circumstance that costs a fortune?  It makes the whole point moot, and frankly, insulting to the intelligence.

With most of the Russian team excluded, this Games is already kind of a joke anyway.  I'm skipping this year, for the most part, and I'm betting I'm not alone.

Watch or GTFO.     Some of us still love the olympics.

What a great event.

It's nice to see some of the prelims out of the way already too, the pomp and circumstance that costs a fortune is worth the price?  It makes the whole point of why we come together, and frankly, a joy to watch.

With most of the Russian team excluded, this Games is already less loaded with cheaters.  I'm up early this year to watch, looking forward for the most part, and I'm betting I'm not alone.

Well, clearly not because there are no commentators and it's quite pleasant.

I especially like the Parade of Nations when it's a completely different language because it have no clue what the order will be.

Ghana first? OK.

2018-02-09 06:29:15 AM
Okay athletes coming out now.

They come out in alphabetical order of the native language of the country they're in, in this case Korean. Greece always comes first, followed by Nigeria, South Africa, The Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand....

2018-02-09 06:30:20 AM
And now Denmark, and then Germany.

The Korean language is nuts.

I hope the Tonga guy is even more greasy than he was at the Summer Games.

It was a joke WITH the Russians competing.

We're alright with them hacking elections, we'll be damned if they hack sports too.

Madagascar.    ?!

This feels like it's moving super fast. The opening dance stuff was barely 20 minutes.

The version tonight with commercials will be interminable.

...and that's a lot of happy.

I always watch the summer ones, I have never seen one move this fast. At this point they'd usually just be getting to the national anthem part. Is it normal for the winter opening ceremony to be so short? maybe they just want all the athletes there before the good stuff. I always felt bad for the athletes that they came in at the end and missed the show.

(I'm a big fan of the Olympics, went to a ton of events when they had them in my city.)

2018-02-09 06:48:22 AM
Just started watching.
Is this the practice run? The place looks empty.

Those center dancers must be tired.

Ha! My wife JUST said that. She said she'd have curled up for a nap by now.

Armenia, Argentina followed by Iceland and Ireland, then Azerbaijan

Sure.

2018-02-09 06:52:29 AM
In one sense I guess I do miss the commentators. I'd like to know what events some of these tiny delegations are doing.

Good thing they payed $109m for the stadium and will use it three more times after this.

I've been wondering the same about some of the flag bearers (yes, I'm thinking of stalking you, Miss Estonia)

2018-02-09 06:54:00 AM
Some jeering for the athletes from Russia

2018-02-09 06:54:15 AM
So the Russians can compete, just under the Olympic flag? I haven't kept up with developments.

2018-02-09 06:56:16 AM
Italy jackets are nice.   Also the flag bearer.

The winter cities get screwed that way. There are no good events for that type stadium. And the smaller cities that have historically hosted don't have anything like it already.

A hockey arena?

Does it need to be outside/open air?

This week on the Grand Tour...

The Greek commentator just said that "Canada will get a lot of medals because Canada is buried in snow and ice for most of the year."

Kenya guy looks cold.

My wife is now a fan of Tonga for some unknown reason.

/sigh

lol.  Tonga guy is back.

Leandros A: The Greek commentator just said that "Canada will get a lot of medals because Canada is buried in snow and ice for most of the year."

And Ghana will not get a lot of medals because they rarely have snow.

I'm messing with the Southern Europeans in the office, talking about "The Olympics" and that I prefer "The Olympics" over "The Summer Olympics"

Because they say the reverse.

I thing Vancouver used one of their arena, but it would a smaller floor space.
Korea probably believes the long term sports and tourism benefit is worth the expense.

They're still WAY below the Billions Russia spent.

And the area is only a couple hour by train from Seul, it should get a lot of continued use.

The most bad-ass man in the world!

2018-02-09 07:11:15 AM
Greasy Tongan guy is back! He is now greasier than ever, and he's even more ripped than before.

The stadium will be torn down after the 4 events it's scheduled for and the polls showed S.Koreans are not so interested in winter sports. But yea, I genuinely hope it's not a waste and some facilities are used. Plus infrastructure should be better getting into the mountains

wtf why is Hong Kong separate?
