So, you run a fake playbook and then actually beat them...I would love to jump on the "look, more circumstantial evidence of Patriot cheating" but there's enough real evidence out there that we don't have to use this. Still, I find it pretty comical that teams are still to this day so concerned about it that they'll go to those lengths to keep the playing field fair.

It's funny because you don't know what you're talking about.

The fact that they took the time to put together a fake practice speaks volumes.  This tells me that the Eagles coaching staff is aware that the Cheatriots are still doing what they do best.

Malcolm Butler got benched as pink was belting out "and the rockets red glare."  Threw off the whole defensive plan and caused a distraction.  Not saying it would have mattered because butler wasn't that great this year (still wondering why all these pundits are making him sound like he's Deion Sanders)

This loss is on Belichick, he knows it and so does the team.

They made a key defensive stop when it mattered and kudos to them for doing so, they earned the win.  But in a game where there was the total combined punts were 1, it was a matter of who's gonna screw up first?

Sounds like that's been helping you to sleep at night.  Seattle fans telling themselves that they would have won had Carroll called a run play probably helped them, too.

In some alternate universe the Seahawks run the ball straight into a goal line defense and fumble the ball and everybody is like "why didn't you throw it?"

Scott Zolak said exactly this.  He does the radio color commentary (Unicorns! showponies! where's the beef?!) and at the time said it was one of the worst calls in Super Bowl History.
Belichick took the time to pull him aside show him film from the same personnel and a similar situation from earlier in the game where the defense blew the play up.  In Belichick's opinion (whatever it's worth) avoiding the run was the right call - a passing play was warranted, just perhaps not that particular playcall.

Their mistake was running a play from shotgun at all. Ball's on the 1. Don't snap it back to the seven. That eliminates a dive or sneak.

Who would win? The best OL in the league this season or the cheapest front 7 in the league, led by a 39 year old castoff? Obviously it was the OL, there were a number of plays where Foles didn't so much have a pocket as much as he had a parking lot. In many ways it was the Patriots overachieving on offense because you'd expect the sacks to be lopsided in favor of the Eagles.

Or just go under center and do a PA pass, it would've frozen Butler and given Wilson an easy backyard pitch and catch.

It's a tough one for Philly because it had always been rumored that NE had watched the Eagles walkthrough during the last Superbowl. That game, they just kept figuring out every time Philly would blitz and then had a screen pass ready. Never happened all year and announcers were baffled. It wore out the D for the second half. Over the years, there was no evidence (just evidence of the Ram's SB) but it always stuck with Philly that it might have happened/could happen. Pace's comments the other day stir it up some.

It's just something that will always coming up with NE; you get caught a couple of times and people are going to assume you'll try again (even if they never do throughout the rest of their careers).

Yeah, Eagles fans are still bent out of shape over that (though not anymore after last Sunday).

However, the simpler explanation for that Super Bowl makes more sense.  Andy Reid was coaching.

I'll say it.  Yeah, he wasn't great, but he was a mainstay on a defense that was porous at best all year.   They leaned on the "bend but don't break" doctrine one too many times.

Pulling him (Butler)  right before the kick-off had to send shockwaves throughout the entire team, especially the defense.  Belichick got out-coached before, and during the superbowl.  He totally screwed the pooch, and farked up big time.

This one is gonna sting- worse than any other loss, worse than 18-0.  The kind of sting that'll never go away.  He rode Brady's all-time performance to a crushing defeat.  Nice work, Bill.

I actually thought about it from this angle... usually a good offense boosts a defense's stats.  The Patriots had a great offense, but their defense was still only middle of the pack... so... was their defense really any good?

There's absolutely no evidence that the Patriots were watching the Eagles on Saturday or any other Super Bowl opponent prior to any other Super Bowl.

Bombshell ESPN report says Patriots' 'Spygate' scandal was way worse than people realized

Patriots:
Filmed team signals so they knew what the defense was calling.
Sneaked into visiting locker room to steal play sheet (so they knew what the offense was calling)
Jamming opponent headsets during key moments

With this additional gross nugget:  "Each video sequence would usually include three shots: the down and distance, the signal, and, as an in-house joke, a tight shot of a cheerleader's top or skirt."

They'll be here. That narrative gradually evolved from "every team tries to cheat in one way or another" to "they only got in trouble because the camera was just outside the designated area" to "it was totally legal to film hand signals at the time." The funny part is, there are dozens of articles from big outlets that easily debunk anything they have to say. Ask for a source on filming hand signals being legal and they disappear from the thread.

No evidence of that one either.

The story was completely fabricated by somebody who wouldn't even know and told to a writer who wanted it to be true so he just ran with it.

You guys should really do your research.

The Patriots studied the Eagles that year. They knew which plays the Eagles could run based on what formations they were in. It was all game film. Apparently it was a novel idea at the time.

Even now I'm amazed at how some of the better teams in the league fall flat in the playoffs because they just either refuse to study, or don't know how to study.

The rules say what they say. And they don't say what they don't say. If you try real hard you can get them to say what you want them to say.

So yes, I believe you read the rule that gets repeated and you make it say what you want it to say. Especially when you add in words that weren't actually in the rule or the memo. The phrase "coaches signals" does not appear in there, only in the interpretation afterward by whichever author who quotes the rule.

"No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game. All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

So... we can film hand signals on the opponent's sideline and it's totally cool? That's a very generous interpretation of the rule.

Yep.

TFA"I believe our whole walk-through was just a complete fake walk-through," Lovato said. "We did it at the stadium. There were certain people walking around. . . . I believe I overheard someone say a lot of the plays we were running weren't even in the playbook for the Super Bowl."

A long snapper heard something!  I'll wait until someone who actually was involved with it admits participation, otherwise it sounds fairly made up for getting a long snapper some publicity.  I mean, "I believe I overheard someone say..." is so farking vague.

I hate the Patriots, but this is farking weak.

Because I can find 10 results in one Google search that say it's legal to spy, but going on the opponent's sideline or taping is not. The Pats did both of those things.

Well now you just doubled down on the fun.

Weird that you can't do it. So we're just supposed to take your word for it?

Again, show me the part of the rule that says you're not allowed to videotape hand signals.
