gretzkyscores: If I were a young male in the current culture, I'd probably avoid sex for the most part too. Young women nowadays get wasted drunk or stoned, seek out validation and have sex with you to get it, then regret it later and claim you raped her. It's simply not worth the risk of having your life ruined.

So much this.

This is a right-wing attack on the Me Too movement. The author is from the American Enterprise Institute.

I can see why conservatives would find this argument persuasive. Conservatives are generally pro rape, and they're generally pro rape because that's the only way they can get any. So of course they think the Me Too movement's focus on sexual misconduct is a threat to their sexual relationships.

Other kinds of men find nothing at all threatening about the Me Too movement. The kinds of behaviors targeted by Me Too are abhorrent to us. I do not grab women by their pussies. I do not hang around malls trying to pick up underage girls. I do not corner women and masturbate in front of them.

In fact, the idea of doing any of the things exposed by MeToo boggles my mind. I can neither imagine doing any of those things, nor even wanting to do any of those things. I had no idea these behaviors were so common.

My reaction to Me Too isn't to find it threatening. It's a combination of jaw-dropped astonishment and compassion. I had no idea the sh*t women have had to deal with for so long. And I empathize with women who've been victimized by it.

No surprise really; just Young Americans learning the lessons of the Seventies...

It took him minutes, took her nowhere

10 years ago my kids were 5 and 2. The chance of both of them being asleep at the same time, and neither of them in our bed, and the wife and I both awake, and a production issue at work requiring on call support was practically nonexistent. So hardly any sex then.

Since then I've switched jobs and the phone never rings at night. The kids almost always settle down and go to sleep without problems. Unfortunately the wife's libido has fallen off a cliff and is now set to leavemealonegetawayfrommestoptouchingme.

Net result: amount of sex is about the same, 6 to 8 times a year

Couple reasons for this, I think.

1. People don't go out as much, either due to having everything they need at home (Internet), or not being able to afford to.

2. There are fewer widespread interests since culture has become much more fragmented.

3. Online dating has all the flaws of regular dating, and then some.

Mouth condom?.. not sure they make those.

2018-02-09 03:14:30 PM
One more reason.

4. Social norms are changing quickly. This makes people more cautious when it comes to getting intimate. These norms are changing for the better, but the change does make things tougher for people with anxiety disorders (which is a sizable number).

Walkingtalkingeye: What are your thoughts on the part that says young people are more than twice as likely as old people to think that commenting on a womans appearance is harassment?

Unfortunately, I've used up my article limit for The Economist, which is the citation the author provides for that assertion.

I want to know more about how the question was phrased. Because there's a lot wrapped up in this.

"Commenting on a woman's appearance" encompasses a whole lot of very different ideas. And I find nothing at all troubling about the proposition that young people are aware that commenting on a woman's appearance can be harassment, depending on factors like the commentator's motive, social context, and what was actually said.

Obviously, depending on social context, there's nothing wrong with a friendly "hey, you look sharp today," or a empathetic "you look exhausted." If young people think those kinds of comments are harassing, that would be very silly. But I very strongly doubt that's what very many young people believe.

Probably the neckbeard virgins are throwing all the averages down. Back in the day they would either succumb to the temptation of going to a prostitute or off themselves. Now, they have reddit and Twitter to harass women to let off some steam.

And probably working +10hs a day in two different jobs while living with your parents because you can't afford your own place is throwing the number of times a year the rest is having sex.

That was the risk the hipsters took when they went for "metrosexual" fashion.

It's fine if you're actually gay, but that same look becomes a Cloak of Unattainability if you're a fomo.

Girls will think you're hot and gay and just give you a "harrumph!" when they walk by.

Gay men can figure out mimics more or less instantly, like a dog detecting a Terminator.

Straight men will think you're hot and gay and just give you a "harrumph!" when they walk by.

Millennials are doing everything that is social less. Bars are feeling the pinch, service organizations, organized religion, community groups, pretty much anything that requires people to interact is going through a contraction period. Sex and relationships are not an exception to this.

Also, don't be too panic-y, look at the data. They haven't stopped having sex, they just have it less frequently than they did at the height of we'll-call-it the sexual era. Basically, Late Gen-Xers went through a fairly hedonistic period in the 90s that was unsustainable and frankly unhealthy as they essentially were raised by Boomers who thought actually putting limits on sexual conduct was bad. Millennials are getting much closer to pre-sexual revolution behaviors which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Far from it. There's also a need to recognize that a lot of this behavior shifting is happening among minorities and that white teen pregnancy has always been lower and minorities are finally catching up with white numbers which shifts the average. It means that minority women are finally better able to assert their sexual independence when even 20 years ago it was much more difficult for them. Anyway, there are a lot of things going on and we'll have to find a way to deal with the challenges that we're bringing on ourselves.

Fun fact - different people have different libidos, and where they happen to be on their personal spectrum shifts throughout their lives. Don't assume that lack of libido makes an unhappy marriage, even in cases where it happens to be the main source of arguments. A happy marriage can be low on physicality, and a toxic marriage can be thrice daily in the sack.

Sucks when a each person in the realtionship is at a very different place libido-wise, but that hardly makes a broken marriage

Or, you know, have a very direct and awkward TALK with your spouse before doing something really stupid?

Been married over 20 years, so I know that really direct talk can be VERY difficult on certain subjects and issues can be left to fester for far too long before there is a 'having it out' discussion.   But... the discussion ultimately need to happen or the marriage dries up like a neglected plant.
