Yes, yes it is. Although as far as I can tell, almost never without "Netflix and" in front of it.

Of course individual results may vary. In regards to both the word chill and how much sex young people are having. On the other hand, to quote one now skeevy American icon, "It's not the quantity of your sexual relations that counts. It's the quality. On the other hand if the quantity drops below once every eight months, I would definitely look into it."

Have you noticed, that people are not having sex?
All the pronouncement, had absolutely no effect.
Parents and counselors, constantly warn them.
But people are not having sex and nothing seems to start them.
Do you realize that people are not having sex?
They've been shown how to, perhaps they are perplexed.

I'm sure someone we're now supposed to be terrified of how the kids are not having sex.

They're just finding more rewarding uses of their time. Less awkward grabbing with people they don't even really like just because they're the only ones who would agree to it, just to convince other people they don't really like that they are cool.

It's been a while since my awful sex ed classes, but I was basically told if I had sex I would immediately have babies and die of AIDS. If I was one of the lucky ones, I would only get herpes.

Unless, of course, I had a wedding ring on. A bit of shopping mall gold would protect against all of that.

And yeah, it was a public school.

Millennials are just the worst:
-Not buying houses they can't afford
-Not having children they can't afford
-Not getting STD's they can't afford
-Not getting abortions they can't afford

Actually, I don't think you can consider current 'young Americans' Millennials.  I don't think someone born in 2002 is a 'millennial'.

Pretty much this accross the board.  Teens are having less sex because they are having much less physical interaction.  A lot easier to 'sext' without the parents knowing than it was to have phone sex.  As adults people are buried in their devices sunup to sundown and it's a lot easier to sneak off to the bathroom with the tablet than it was to wait for the house to be empty and put in a DVD.

In short there are just way more options now and people are taking them.  No snark, I would bet in the not to distant future sex has been relegated to a 'for procreation only' type thing that may even be superseded by more scientific methods.  Haha, I just described the scenario in demolition man.

Society has scared them sh*tless. Between having to sign and notarize forms in triplicate before doing the nasty to warnings from the time they realize that their nether parts are different than those of the opposite sex that bumping uglies will make your entire crotch explode in flames, it's no wonder that "kids these days" have issues with "that act".

Besides, these poor schmucks are going to have it tough enough financially in their lives... complicating things with an unwanted pregnanacy is most definitely NOT a good idea.

Thank goodness those years were in the 70s and 80s for me...

"A recent poll in The Economistillustrates how young adults are now more concerned than their older peers about sexual assault, and more likely to view behavior related to sex and dating as troubling. Young adults in the United States were about twice as likely as Americans 64 and older to think that commenting on a woman's attractiveness was sexual harassment. Describing all this as a "sexual counter-revolution," Douglas Murray at The Spectatorargued that "whereas the 1960s saw a freeing up of attitudes towards sex, pushing at boundaries, this counter-swing is turning sexual freedom into sexual fear, and nearly all sexual opportunities into a legalistic minefield.""

I've thought for a while now that this could be one of the consequences of the metoo movement, that people are less willing to engage in flirty behaviour for fear of it being considered harassment. Overall of course the movement is good, but I'm glad to see someone think about the downsides.

What nowadays is an acceptable way to meet people besides dating apps? Any sort of advance is seen as creepy. It must be hard for young people now that already don't have much confidence to have to worry about being considered a pervert or harasser. I'm just glad I'm out of all that nonsense. I hope I never have to go on another first date again.

It's simply not worth the risk of having your life ruined.

Nothing is discreet anymore. The younger gen may be a bit leery of hooking up since any intimate encounter could be blasted out on social media within a few minutes (minute 4 or 5) and then you have to deal with everyone's inquiries.
You can't just hook up on a Friday night anymore and maybe chat on the phone a few times and give the person that awkward look at school on Monday.
If something during your date goes wrong, be ready to divert full power to shields.

This is a right-wing attack on the Me Too movement. The author is from the American Enterprise Institute.

I can see why conservatives would find this argument persuasive. Conservatives are generally pro rape, and they're generally pro rape because that's the only way they can get any. So of course they think the Me Too movement's focus on sexual misconduct is a threat to their sexual relationships.

Other kinds of men find nothing at all threatening about the Me Too movement. The kinds of behaviors targeted by Me Too are abhorrent to us. I do not grab women by their pussies. I do not hang around malls trying to pick up underage girls. I do not corner women and masturbate in front of them.

In fact, the idea of doing any of the things exposed by MeToo boggles my mind. I can neither imagine doing any of those things, nor even wanting to do any of those things. I had no idea these behaviors were so common.

My reaction to Me Too isn't to find it threatening. It's a combination of jaw-dropped astonishment and compassion. I had no idea the sh*t women have had to deal with for so long. And I empathize with women who've been victimized by it.

10 years ago my kids were 5 and 2. The chance of both of them being asleep at the same time, and neither of them in our bed, and the wife and I both awake, and a production issue at work requiring on call support was practically nonexistent. So hardly any sex then.

Since then I've switched jobs and the phone never rings at night. The kids almost always settle down and go to sleep without problems. Unfortunately the wife's libido has fallen off a cliff and is now set to leavemealonegetawayfrommestoptouchingme.

Couple reasons for this, I think.

1. People don't go out as much, either due to having everything they need at home (Internet), or not being able to afford to.

2. There are fewer widespread interests since culture has become much more fragmented.

3. Online dating has all the flaws of regular dating, and then some.

Mouth condom?.. not sure they make those.

2018-02-09 03:14:30 PM

4. Social norms are changing quickly. This makes people more cautious when it comes to getting intimate. These norms are changing for the better, but the change does make things tougher for people with anxiety disorders (which is a sizable number).

Walkingtalkingeye: What are your thoughts on the part that says young people are more than twice as likely as old people to think that commenting on a womans appearance is harassment?

Unfortunately, I've used up my article limit for The Economist, which is the citation the author provides for that assertion.

I want to know more about how the question was phrased. Because there's a lot wrapped up in this.

"Commenting on a woman's appearance" encompasses a whole lot of very different ideas. And I find nothing at all troubling about the proposition that young people are aware that commenting on a woman's appearance can be harassment, depending on factors like the commentator's motive, social context, and what was actually said.

Obviously, depending on social context, there's nothing wrong with a friendly "hey, you look sharp today," or a empathetic "you look exhausted." If young people think those kinds of comments are harassing, that would be very silly. But I very strongly doubt that's what very many young people believe.

Probably the neckbeard virgins are throwing all the averages down. Back in the day they would either succumb to the temptation of going to a prostitute or off themselves. Now, they have reddit and Twitter to harass women to let off some steam.

And probably working +10hs a day in two different jobs while living with your parents because you can't afford your own place is throwing the number of times a year the rest is having sex.

mittromneysdog: This is a right-wing attack on the Me Too movement.

That was the risk the hipsters took when they went for "metrosexual" fashion.

It's fine if you're actually gay, but that same look becomes a Cloak of Unattainability if you're a fomo.

Girls will think you're hot and gay and just give you a "harrumph!" when they walk by.

Gay men can figure out mimics more or less instantly, like a dog detecting a Terminator.

Straight men will think you're hot and gay and just give you a "harrumph!" when they walk by.

Millennials are doing everything that is social less. Bars are feeling the pinch, service organizations, organized religion, community groups, pretty much anything that requires people to interact is going through a contraction period. Sex and relationships are not an exception to this.

Also, don't be too panic-y, look at the data. They haven't stopped having sex, they just have it less frequently than they did at the height of we'll-call-it the sexual era. Basically, Late Gen-Xers went through a fairly hedonistic period in the 90s that was unsustainable and frankly unhealthy as they essentially were raised by Boomers who thought actually putting limits on sexual conduct was bad. Millennials are getting much closer to pre-sexual revolution behaviors which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Far from it. There's also a need to recognize that a lot of this behavior shifting is happening among minorities and that white teen pregnancy has always been lower and minorities are finally catching up with white numbers which shifts the average. It means that minority women are finally better able to assert their sexual independence when even 20 years ago it was much more difficult for them. Anyway, there are a lot of things going on and we'll have to find a way to deal with the challenges that we're bringing on ourselves.

Fun fact - different people have different libidos, and where they happen to be on their personal spectrum shifts throughout their lives. Don't assume that lack of libido makes an unhappy marriage, even in cases where it happens to be the main source of arguments. A happy marriage can be low on physicality, and a toxic marriage can be thrice daily in the sack.

Sucks when a each person in the realtionship is at a very different place libido-wise, but that hardly makes a broken marriage

Or, you know, have a very direct and awkward TALK with your spouse before doing something really stupid?

Been married over 20 years, so I know that really direct talk can be VERY difficult on certain subjects and issues can be left to fester for far too long before there is a 'having it out' discussion.   But... the discussion ultimately need to happen or the marriage dries up like a neglected plant.

I haven't seen any shortage of millennial men interested in sex, within a relationship or not. However, there doesn't seem to be much of a population of straight single women looking for it. Maybe they've given up, or maybe that right wing conspiracy theory of sex-selective abortion resulting in millions of girls being aborted in favor of trying for a boy has some truth to it. Supposedly, women make up more than 50% of the population, but the problem is the additional ones are all over 60. It's skewed because men don't live as long. I wonder what the actual ratio of single, straight, 18-35 females to 18-35 males is. Just seems like it wouldn't be so weird if there wasn't a problem of unbalanced demand.

Some fascinating charts on that.

A whole lot of that imbalance pattern is the number of 28 year old women who become a 43 year old man's second wife.

On the more anecdotal side, Tinder is a helluva force. A lot of young women idly swipe... not even for hookups, just self-esteem stroking. A lot of men are hungry as all hell. The side-effect of five thousand 'hey babys' is a huge inflation in who many women think they should be able to lock down for a LTR.

"Gee, I'm working 12 hours a week at three jobs and you're working 12 hours a week at three jobs. Let's have a kid."

"Sure, sounds good."

so much truth on Fark tonight. FFS THIS.

Walkingtalkingeye: "A recent poll in The Economistillustrates how young adults are now more concerned than their older peers about sexual assault, and more likely to view behavior related to sex and dating as troubling.

Flirty behavior is fine if done appropriately and in the right scenario.  The problem isn't that flirting is always dangerous, the problem is that bosses are trying to flirt with subordinates, coworkers, etc.  You flirt with classmates and girls at the party or dance floor.  Not at work, not with students or interns.

As far as appropriate flirting, as the old Monty Python skit says, my God boy, you don't go straight for the clitoris!   You say something complimentary but not overtly sexual and you see how they react.  If they don't seem receptive you stop.  That's it.

Almost impossible to get in trouble that way.

Of course, looking back on my younger days I think there were times when a girl was flirting with me and I did the catch it, so I came off as not being receptive.  So there's that downside to testing the waters subtly and then stopping.

mrsleep: gretzkyscores: If I were a young male in the current culture, I'd probably avoid sex for the most part too. Young women nowadays get wasted drunk or stoned, seek out validation and have sex with you to get it, then regret it later and claim you raped her. It's simply not worth the risk of having your life ruined.

So much this.
No one wants to be the next Aziz Ansari.

Aziz was an asshole in that encounter.  If you're having sex with anybody other than a joyously willing participant, then you need to stop.  What the fark is the turn on in watching a girl get bored or anxious with you inside her?  You have to just flat out not give a shiat about the girl to still make yourself come in that scenario.  The sexiest thing about sex is watching a partner get more and more turned on right in front of your eyes.  Absent that, I'd rather just masturbate.

studebaker hoch: Peter_B_Risen: I'll go with effeminization of the urban American male.

I don't know if it'll shock you, but metro guys aren't the ones not having any sex. Putting a lot of effort (and cash) into your appearance is one of the best returns on investment if you want a lot of sex. Metro is just the 2000's word for what was once "dapper" or "snazzy," after all; the gay-fashionista-descended styles are only a tiny subset of it. Gen-X is just angry that their jeans-and-t-shirt uniform isn't hip anymore.

/Nothing beats Tinder though.

tjfly: Thong_of_Zardoz: As the recent Aziz Ansari incident has shown, the best thing for a young man to do is to avoid women entirely.

This.

More like the Aziz Ansari incident is a good example of why women should avoid men entirely.

The guy sounds like the poster child for asshole.

Absolutely, the only people who complain about metrosexuals are the other men who resent the competition. It pisses them off that women like a good looking guy who puts some effort into his appearance, because it means they might have to also put some effort in, and they essentially can't be bothered. So they console themselves by biatching about it instead.
