FlashHarry: how much money does the GOP get from the private prison industry?

Too much.  Reducing convicts to profit centers for billionaires can only have negative effects on society.

You know what Switzerland has virtually none of?  Street heroin.

America is awash in illegal guns and low IQ crazy people.

I'm totally willing to listen to the Portugal model, but we have to admit that America is a special, very crazy case.

Legalize pot, I'm fine with. Other stuff is a bit trickier.

Woah woah woah, when Trump told me he was going to solve the opioid epidemic, I didn't think he meant in the same way as we treat black people drug problems!

Drug distributors, pharmaceutical companies, and users are all violating current written law as this crisis continues.  The hammer of enforcement should really come down on the first two while the users get addiction treatment.  Somehow I think the hammer is going to the users, though, and the first two groups might even get a bailout!

Well is that  as bad as a lot of small town Republicans who basically said, now that it's effecting white people it is NOW a crisis and we need to stop putting people in jail and instead help these people.

The only outcome Trump cares about is the one where his cronies end up with more money in their pockets. Short of Ivanka dieing of a fentanyl overdose nothing will change that.

"It's very hard to make sense of," says Keith Humphreys

It really isn't, Keith: The White House is being run by a pack of fuggin' liars and thieves who barely try to disguise it. Expecting them to behave in any other way is what's very hard to make sense of.

Until it dawns on him that opioid "dealers" are rich, white corporations and "pushers" (nice 70's lingo there) are wealthy white doctors and the only ones he will want to get really, really mean with will be poor helpless addicts.

At this point it is just willful ignorance to carry on any other way...

But that is the GOP favorite past time

On the plus side, chances are a disproportionate number of those poor helpless addicts are white trash Trump voters, so fark them.

President Trump doesn't have an opinion on the subject.  But the Keebler Elf A.G. whispered it in his ear post-coitally, and thus it became policy.

Why?  How is the current model, which destroys people, family, neighborhoods, property, and our concept of a free society, somehow better than literally any other option?  Seriously, unless you are one of those profiting from the illegal drug trade (law enforcement or drug dealers) what advantage does drug prohibiton have?  Cause we lost the drug war a long time ago.  Literally anything would be better.  We could just choose a cartel and tell them that they have carte Blanche to sell drugs in the US and it would work better. Prohibition doesn't work.  We can turn every police department into an army and burn the Bill of Rights and people would still be able to get drugs.

It's really messed up because America won its first drug war.  They treated it like a public health problem and fought it with education. Because they were actually interested in dealing with the problem, not using drug prohibition laws to destroy minorities and liberals.

Well, no. The way they phrased it was horrible, but the actual solution is better than what Trump is suggesting.

/Are we not doing phrasing anymore?

Somehow it never occurred to these law-and-order types that if they hadn't been so hard core decades ago, maybe we wouldn't have a drug crisis in the first place. Maybe you should have just left the hippies alone to smoke their dope; if they'd been able to do that, people never would have felt the need to make meth.

I'm not in any way advocating drug use. I've never taken drugs, and I have no interest in starting. But it's painfully obvious that incarceration is the wrong way to handle the problem.

I said I'm for the Portugal model. We just have to be careful in how we implement it. Pot should just be legalized regardless of that. To start.

But I am totally open to rolling it out in some organized fashion. Highly controlled, studied and federally funded. I know the only way forward is with legalization, treatment and all of that.

We just have to admit we're not like other countries in these comparisons. We're pretty farked up.

It's simply pandering to old people who want the government to get tough on those scary, scary DRUGS!

You know, those scared old people who want to go back to the "good ole days".

Typical GOP base.
