If you put on a uniform and join <insert branch of armed forces> I think you should qualify for citizenship, if you are not already a citizen.

You serve your country and is the least your country can do for you, in return

Shameless spiteful bigotry on the part of the Presidential administration.

Sure.  Ultimately the buck stops there.  Serving in the military should absolutely let you jump the line in becoming a citizen.

Although just a piece of advice to other immigrants: maybe don't go handing briefcases full of cocaine to undercover cops.  It's not going to end well for you.

Now he's being punished for thinking that we'd be OK with a citizen doing that.
Of course, this is Trump's fault although he did the crime weeks after Obama was elected.

Got kicked out of the army for drugs.
Didn't fill out his citizenship paperwork.
Didn't go to his VA appts.

Get people to enlist, get them mangled or broken from war, then when they get out and start having issues, find reasons to deny helping them. In this case, they can just deport them and have them die quickly once they're no longer useful to the military.

Beancounters are sure to love the new way to get off the hook for paying to help someone in need. Fark this country.

The judges also. And those are not Trump appointees.

We're going to have to start hiding people in our attics like Anne Frank. I have had this conversation with an undocumented friend. We talked about how his (citizen) kids can be provided for if he's deported, and we very seriously talked about the Anne Frank option.

You do qualify, but you still have to apply for citizenship, he didn't. So he is eligible to be deported just like any other immigrant who commits serious crimes.

Couple questions:

1.  If he hasn't lived in Mexico since he was 8 years old, why would his life be in danger there?
2.  Why did he have cocaine in his laptop case and why did he "hand" it to somebody else that he obviously did not know?

Sounds like he might, just might, be a dealer.

Exactly!  If he not turned to drugs and had gone back to the hospital like he was supposed to he most likely would not be in this situation right now.

On a serious note, whatever happened to someone serving their time and getting on with their lives as best as possible?  Seems like he is being punished a second time, but instead of 15 years he is getting a life sentence.

But Trumpy wants to have a military parade, so that will make the soldiers all super-patriotic and they will take the pay cut with a smile and be happy because it is patriotic!

He was. Thus the 15 year prison sentence(that was halved, so I assume good behavior). And his life being in danger in Mexico might have something to do with that. Or maybe his family fled because they were already in danger there.

There are huge swaths of Army veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan that have drug convictions thanks to PTSD and a lack of treatment. The only difference between this guy and the rest is they were born citizens, he was not.

The article noted that he had been diagnosed with PTSD after serving two tours in Afghanistan.  Drug usage is a common strategy used to cope with PTSD.  Hell, the VA spent years basically tossing opiates at vets with PTSD because it was cheaper than treatment.

It's clear that though the Trump administration says they're for a path to citizenship, they really don't care about it. They're deporting legal immigrants and permanent residents at an alarming rate, while letting illegal immigrants slip through the cracks (like the guy that plowed into the car Edwin Jackson was in). And it's quite telling that they're doing it to people from non-European countries far more than from European countries.  In other words, Trump just wants to throw out anyone with a skin color darker than his natural skin color (not the orange he usually looks)...

/Soon you'll hear stories of ICE attempting to detain and deport brown people born in America...

This is a case of idiots believing every "PTSD" made me deal drugs story.

People are full of it. Here's an article from a few years ago, "I didn't know drugs where in the package".

Deported veterans ask Obama for relief

"Bailey said he had no idea of the package's contents. He never thought to ask what was being delivered."

That's not what it said in the Tribune article subby linked to.  Is this additional information coming from somewhere?

FTFA: After returning to Chicago following his military service, Perez sought treatment at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Maywood, where doctors diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder. He was supposed to return for more tests to determine whether he also suffered a traumatic brain injury.
In the meantime, he reconnected with a childhood friend who provided free drugs and alcohol. On the night of Nov. 26, 2008, while with that friend, Perez handed a laptop case containing cocaine to an undercover law enforcement officer. Perez pleaded guilty to the drug charge and served half of a 15-year prison sentence.

To me that sounds like the reason he missed his appointments for the TBI injuries was because he got arrested.  But that may not be the whole story.

Just curious how you extend your logic to less gray scenarios.  Btw, I am a supporter of you bleed for this country then you should get citizenship, assuming you fulfill your commitment.

He was discharged in 2008, meaning his service and injuries happened under the Bush II administration.  The second administration I was referring to was Rauner's.
