Following a review of city management, grand jurors reported they were "shocked to learn of the lack of knowledge of government operations by those entrusted with governance."

Could we empanel them to look at the current Federal Executive Branch next?

DeFuniak Springs is the last normal place to stop on the way to the beach for me. It has enough fast food or grocery options to satisfy everyone in the car.

There is no reason for the town to exist other than as a giant truck stop.

Perhaps narrow that down to the White House for starters.

Well...yeah...Florida.

The grand jury seems to have been generous. It sounds like it would have been appropriate to submit a recommendation to the Governor's office that the Governor invoke Florida Statute 112.51(1) to remove several city officials for neglect of duty and incompetence.

Hey, I just want a government rent by regular guys like me. Not some educated college boy, just a guy you can have a beer with. It's all just common sense anyway. If you can balance your checkbook, running a government shouldn't be any different. We don't need career government employees with agendas, just regular folks.

See? Govermenting is just that easy and Default Springs here is proof.

*run not rent.

My exact thought. Who knew governing could be so complicated?

Autocorrect or on purpose? Worth a funny either way.

At this point, I'd accept evidence they attended any social studies course in jr high and passed with better than a D

Their GPA  depends on how much money their daddies gave to the school.

Christ, how about just an ability to read and comprehend?

They got three notices that their audits were late and they'd lose money, and nobody got that part?

Just about every North Florida town is ran by a city council full of Trumps.  Old senile men, and women, who are too old to learn anything new, and way too stubborn to ever admit it.  There are many great older people in politics, but the sheer number of dotards should make us pass a law that says you can not run for office once you become eligible for social security.

Incompetence, yes. Neglect of duty would be hard to prove considering the charter didn't really define duties or form of government according to the article.

FTA: "From the city manager, to the mayor and City Council, there are no defined duties, and as a result no one has a clear understanding of who is responsible for what," Anchors said.
The grand jury reported the DeFuniak Springs charter was written in 1903 and hasn't been updated much since. It provides no reference to the form of government (commission, council-strong mayor, council manager or hybrid) the city has adopted.

They may have a case for the original charter drafter/legal advisor to have been negligent in his duties, but he's long since exited public service.

It's a generic problem.  I once worked in the financial department at a state university.  Their accountants got written up in audits for not balancing the university's checkbook, two years in a row.  Guess who got assigned to catch it all up?  The guy with the engineering degree, me.  I left before they got written up for not balancing the rest of the year.

/Bottom line after balancing 26 months of records: $1.62 off

The word you're looking for is microcosm. DeFuniak Springs is a microcosm.

mi·cro·cosm
ˈmīkrəˌkäzəm/
noun
a community, place, or situation regarded as encapsulating in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger.

Lets see, there's a mayor, a manager, an accountant, and a lawyer. That sounds like at least two more positions than that town needs. It sounds like the should copypasta the charter of a similar sized but less fuct town.

Following a review of city management, grand jurors reported they were "shocked to learn of the lack of knowledge of government operations by those entrusted with governance."

A "certain culture" has existed at City Hall for several years, the report said. It "included a lack of transparency by some upper-level city officials not keeping the City Council informed of pressing issues." It said some employees also worried about retaliation if "certain suggestions or complaints were made."

"The city has violated its own laws at least three years in a row," the grand jury said.

All this shiat sounds really familiar ...

Let's run the government like a business!!!

If this government were a business, it would be bankrupt by now and the people running it would be in jail.

No, that was the combined  value of the accountants who were supposed to balance the checkbook.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have found Galt's Gulch.

It's a town of less than 7000 people. Odds are it's run like Bell, California, where a city manager effectively looted the place while the "elected" idiots who were supposedly his bosses just collected their outsize paychecks, shut up, and signed off on whatever he wanted.

Be assured there are numerous slush funds set up under the guise of economic development. The DeFuniak Springs Center of Economic Cooperation, The Downtown Development Partnership, and so on. And surprise surprise, all these groups have a board filled by people who benefit from tax grants given to the group.

Republicans are corrupt on all levels, fed, state, and especially local. And I know they're Republicans because I grew up near DeFuniak in a similar-sized town, run by the same sleazy Christian businessmen assholes.

The amount of corruption that can occur in local government is one of America's great failings.

fragMasterFlash: Dissolve the township and let the county take over.

Dissolve all of these little towns. Just have county-level government. Consolidate the police and fire districts. End the little fiefdoms.

Does a place of 7,000 residents need its own police chief, city manager, etc.? Nope.

This Fall on ABC: GRAND JURY!
Empanelled to investigate city mismanagement, a group of citizens end up doing so with wacky results especially after having to resort to on-site investigations.

Actually, it sounds like things might work out. The mayor knows what must be done and where the problems are. Maybe the town can turn it around.
