It fired up some folk not in DC.

2018-02-08 11:53:34 AM
She was pissing off some Republicans into changing their votes and supporting the spending bill at issue, and appealing to her consituency as well. Pretty smooth move.

2018-02-08 11:59:30 AM
Branding and cover.  She gets to show herself (and her party) as caring for Dreamers therefore satisfying some core Democratic Party constituencies of ethnic minorities, the empathetic (what conservatives call SJWs), and the cosmopolitan (people not afraid of immigrants).  It's a no-brainer.

Nobody wonders aloud why-o-why Susan Collins holds out for things that Mainers like.

Makes it clear that whatever comes out of the house the Dems don't own it.

Well, they might if she did.  She talks, but doesn't actually hold out for anything.

The judges would have also accepted, "to get re-elected."

What was the point?  To once again say:  "Democrats don't abandon those desperately in need of our support when they are under attack."

I wish the Dem Pres hopefuls could better step up and articulate how all of these elements of the Democratic platform fit together:   Democrats stand up for the little guy.  Republicans stand up for the people in power.

Democrats stand up for minorities, the poor, the out-of-power, the middle class, and even improving the lives of rural voters who refuse to vote for them.

2018-02-08 12:30:10 PM
Exposes Ryan and the xenophobes if they don't do something on DREAMers like they say they are going to every f-ing time they're in front of the cameras.  Pelosi asked for a promise to bring it up.  Ryan won't even commit to that.  And even the subheader says "But other lawmakers praised her eight-hour talkathon, even if it failed to produce the desired result."

I also have a bone with this:

And Pelosi's protest succeeded in drawing attention to the plight of the young immigrants facing deportation known as Dreamers, a cause no one disputes she wholeheartedly backs.

Last fall she was getting all kinds of shiat for abandoning them.

Nancy Pelosi confronted by immigration rights protesters about her DACA talks with Trump

Democrats stand up for people.  Republicans stand up for money.

That's really all you have to say.  Dems aren't just standing up for minorities, or the poor, or the elderly, etc.  They're standing up for everyone.  Republicans, on the other hand, are stiggin it to everyone except the very wealthy.

2018-02-08 12:31:53 PM
Because even though it's a lost cause, she's at least trying to show some support for DACA... you know that issue the Dems fought ohhhh so hard for and shut the entire government down over, only to just roll over and let the GOP fark them good and hard in the ass?

Oh but wait -- Schumer said it was really a victory when they took the same idiot deal the GOP gave Flake in exchange for his Tax Scam vote! So the Dems won! WE WON!!!

The  Dems won, and boy did they ever show the GOP what's what!
So go away Pelosi, you're not needed any more.

Now let's call up iCE and get those Dreamers dreaming somewhere else

Matt Fuller @MEPFuller

From the House Dem whip notice:

"Unlike in the Senate, there is no agreement that the House will even consider legislation to protect DREAMers."

"By leaving this vital issue unresolved, this package leaves DREAMers isolated, without a path to resolution in the House."

Dem leadership now whipping against the CRomnibus/caps deal because there's no DREAMer commitment to even consider legislation. Ask me again what the point was. Go, Nancy, go!

We need to revisit what Republicans stand for. It doesn't seem to be money because destabilizing the government is not good for the economy. What that they're doing is good for is widening the wealth gap regardless of total wealth generated. What's the point of money if you can't lord it over people who are living wretched, impoverished lives?

it was a PR stunt for people who care about DACA. That is it. She can say see I tried as she votes to pass the budget.

Because the Democrats could have easily saved Dana DACA with all the power that they have.

2018-02-08 01:01:08 PM
Her claimed point or the real point?

the Real point was that she's 77 and a lot of Younger dems are openly talking about maybe not having her back as Speaker when they re-take in 2018 (and NOT letting "next in Line" 78-year Hoyer take her place either)

this was her "I'm not dead YET" display

Start building the wall and you can have DACA.

Put that on loop for 8 hours.

2018-02-08 01:03:35 PM
The Democrats had all the leverage with the impending shutdown. They caved, because donors pay for strong Republicans and weak Democrats. The Democrats never had any intention of putting their asses on the line for the Dreamers or DACA folks. Too spineless.

Pelosi is doing this to show that the Democrats on the side of Dreamers, and the it's the evil Republicans that are the bad guys. She can say: see, we did something. Of course, it's total theater. And it's cynical beyond measure.

No, they did not. An extended shutdown would not have accomplished anything on DACA. If you believe that the GOP house and Senate would have given in to Democrats demands on DACA I have some beach front property near Phoenix you may be interested in.

I'm good with that, as long as the bill for the wall includes the language "All funds for the wall from the U.S. will be paid as matching funds to whatever Mexico pays."

Look these are just words, and they can't sell the narrative of "BSAB" and "horse race" if they admit both sides aren't always bad or admit something like the Democrats are/have been trying to get a vote.

Grandstanding or she's finally caught up in her own rhetoric and started believing it. I'm leaning towards grandstanding. She's going to vote for the budget, but she gets to go back to her base and claim that she tried.

Ryan needs her a hell of a lot more than she needs him. He is either going to cave on something for Dreamers, or he isn't going to get any Dem help to get this spending bill over the hump.

And if Ryan can't deliver the votes out of the House,  it's on him, not Dems.

The problem with such an approach is that most people hate to think of themselves as victims. Everybody in the United States thinks that they can be President and the only reason they're not rich is because they didn't work hard enough. "If you're a loser, vote for me!" just doesn't work in America. It's contrary to our ethos, no matter how true it may actually be.

Why cant we vote on these issues in a non-budget farking bill?

2018-02-08 01:14:03 PM
If Ryan was smart he would offer a year long bill that puts DACA back in place.

It gets rid of the issue through the election, doesn't actually provide more than the status quo at best, and shows him "being reasonable" by "providing time while we work on comprehensive immigration reform" that doesn't actually have to be delivered.

Because the Republicans won't let them come to the floor as they cannot agree in their own party on how to handle it and cannot let the Democrats have anything that could be considered a win.

"being reasonable" means "caving in to the communist traitor libby liblib libs" in GOP-speak.
