If by "way better" you mean "just as crappy at 360p" then sure. At 720p it's really not good, I can't imagine how bad it'd look at 4k.

Good for only $500, though.

Yeah, but the breach of contract penalties for having Cavil shave would have tipped the total way, way higher.

Afterward, the Mission Impossible guys should've gone in and digitally removed his mustache too, just as a fark you to Warner Brothers.

Not exactly the same - that was a sort of spur-of-the-moment deal (recorded after the premiere, IIRC), and also was only that brief stinger scene.

Justice League was reshoots.

The real takeaway of this story is using this technology to create fake porn videos starring celebrities.

How far away are we to creating fake videos of politicians doing unscrupulous things?  You know both parties' dirty tricks factions are licking their chops to make these videos...

$25 million to do a craptacular job of digitally removing his mustache in JL vs a couple hundred bucks for a good fake mustache for Mission Impossible?

Yah, they totally made the right choice.

But it looks like he didn't have the source footage of Superman with a mustache. So he had to do his CGI on top of already crappy CGI.

So did the guy who made the video have access to the non-touched up mustache footage? Because if he just ran his thing over the already badly shaved one that's kinda cheating.

My thoughts exactly... If you're trying to show us how spectacular your video editing capabilities are, don't post a shiatty mid resolution video of it. Thanks to video compression artifacting, they both looked the same, and his upper lip looked weird en every example the dude used.

FTFA:
In order to pull off these face-swaps you need to collect and train an AI using thousands of images of the person you want to swap in, but online scraping tools are able to easily access a near unlimited supply of celebrity headshots, like those of Henry Cavill, thanks to search engines like Google.

The big issue is time. If you have enough of it, you could probably take a cheap PC and go frame by frame with Photoshop making edits by hand. The JL team was probably under a huge time crunch.

OK so did he have access to the superman footage with the mustache or did he run his program over the already edited footage because that's what i was asking.

Or, you know, don't have such a toxic relationship with one of the other major studios in Hollywood (in this case Paramount) that you can't work something out with them?  Or don't wrap principal photography and release your actors BEFORE you know whether or not you have a finished product?  There's so much farked about the whole situation that the CGI really has nothing to do with it.

That's not it. What they're talking about here is using deepfake AI to replace the face. That tech hadn't been available at the time, so this is sort of a non-issue, but the point is that they're showing that what studios paid millions for just last year is now possible at home on a cheap-ass computer, with varying (sometimes better) results.

See the Nic Cage compilation above.

Oh, I got it... I'm not sure, I wouldn't be surprised if there was footage available, but even going over the already-removed stuff and getting a better result(Something we really can't tell from the shiatty video) would still be an accomplishment, because it doesn't matter what's there to begin with, he's using the AI to recreate his natural lines and wrinkles, which are what's under the 'stache. Whether you start with a mustache or a shiatty mustache removal job, the computer really has to do the same thing in the end. Like I said, though, the video doesn't really impress because to me it looks like the same weirdness either way.

Because the studio (Paramount) that he did the movie (Mission Impossible: 6) for
after he did this movie (Justice League, Warner Bros)
had written in their contract with him
that he not shave while he was under contract with them on their movie.
He had to go back to the first movie to do reshoots at the same time
he was working on MI6 as the contract allowed
but was still under contract to Paramount
and they would not let him shave.

I can only assume he needed the mustache for another part.  Tho you'd think it'd be easier for him to shave and get a fake mustache for the other role.  Maybe he just didn't feel like it, and it's in his contract that he doesn't have to.

There probably is a little more backstory to it.  Generally one company will try to accommodate as much as possible because you never known when the situation will be reversed.

The unconfirmed reports are that it was mostly Paramount being petty dicks about it.  There must have been some bad blood in the past, and if there ain't, there sure as hell is now.
