I'm wondering how far they actually got with their meddling. Did they just hack voter information,  or did they actually change votes? Both are terrible but the actually changing votes puts us into serious and scary unknown territory.

Yeah, just because voting machines were compromised does not mean anything was actually changed, but at least Chad was not seen hanging around.

Never thought I could hate a President more than him. Not as a person, really, just for his lack of curiosity about the real impact his decisions had on so many lives... But, I was wrong. I was very, very wrong.

Amazing the sh*t you learn as you grow up.

Also, this just solidifies my belief that we need a meeting of all 50 states to come up with and agree on a secure voting system with paper back-ups that allow an easy recount if needed. It would cost less than an aircraft carrier and is probably the most important thing we can do as a Democracy. Which is why we'll never do it no matter how much we scream about it.

Hand me my pencil and scantron please.

Joke all you want, Subby, but I clearly remember the "Bush spent like a liberal" discussions going around in the 2007/2008 timeframe as Republicans tried to back away from his failure of an administration.

Bush is persona non grata to Republicans. 2000 to 2008 didn't exist. It's not like they're going to start talking about him NOW, when they've got another egregious fark-up in the White House that they'll pretend didn't happen.

noYOUare: The use of the word "meddling" has increased exponentially in recent years.

It's because if you actually spell out the kind of "meddling" or "interference" Russia did during the election it makes Americans out to be idiots and kind of puts the entire idea of democracy into question.

Most likely because he seems like a nice enough guy. Now that he is far enough away from power and can't break shiat and we now have Trump time and worse by comparison softened your feelings.

4seasons85!: I'm wondering how far they actually got with their meddling. Did they just hack voter information,  or did they actually change votes? Both are terrible but the actually changing votes puts us into serious and scary unknown territory.

Its very difficult to meaningfully change votes in a digital voting machine on a wide scale since they aren't turned on until voting day and typically aren't connected to a network.

Voter databases -  on the other hand - are connected to the internets and are managed by low paid public employees.  So they are easy targets.  You can't change votes but you can make it harder to vote by changing or deleting voter information.  But I would argue the Republicans have been doing a better job of making it harder to vote than the Russians could dream of.

FTFA: Bush characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as "zero-sum" with a "chip on his shoulder" about the demise of the Soviet Union.
"He can't think, 'How can we both win?' He only thinks, 'How do I win, you lose?'" Bush said.

And W would be the guy to know, after all, he's looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul.

Remember when he was "he who shall not be named."  Gonna be farking hilarious when they start backing away from Trump and refer to Reagan as the last Republican president.

What is truly frightening is we do not know what is to come for our country. In 20 years, if we still exist. we may very well be saying "you know, compared to this, Trump wasn't that bad of a guy."

Think I'm crazy? Look at the romanticizing of Bush (I'm guilty of it too) in this and any other recent thread in which he is a topic.

2018-02-08 11:14:07 AM
Any reasonable person knows Russia meddled in the 2016 election. They pushed pro-Trump propaganda before the election and anti-Trump propaganda after the election. They wanted to create chaos and cast doubt on the process, and the Left and complicit media fell for it.

But the real issue is Russian collusion, and all of that fell at the feet of the Obama administration and the Clinton Foundation, at least according the informant who testified yesterday.

And that's precisely why I say I miss the younger Bush as POTUS. He was appallingly awful as a president; I'd gladly take appallingly awful and in the general vicinity of decent over appallingly awful and colossally assholish.

The intrusions into the systems were just information gathering. The actual attack was the psychological operations directed towards certain subsets of the electorate.

Decent-ish.  I think he at least has the capacity to realize that he farked up a large number of things he tried to do, and surrounded himself with the wrong kind of people.  Maybe he regrets that, maybe he doesn't.

What I think everyone can agree on is that he was a far better President of the United States than Trump is.  Whether that says more about Bush or more about Trump, is up for debate.  I just don't think anyone who hasn't crazy-glued a red MAGA hat to their head can disagree.

This. He has his republicanism, but his goal ultimately WAS the security, safety, and proliferation of America and her interests. We should neither forget, nor forgive his grave errors and even crimes, but I can think about him and his actions without the seething rage that gets into me when I consider what's going on with 45.

Meddled is a tame word.

I believe as others do that it is ridiculous to claim Russia did not alter ballots or ballot counts. They would have not hacked every single layer of election technology  in this country and suddenly stopped at altering actual single ballots or ballot counts.

It was their goal to elect Donald Trump president and the best and most sure way of doing that was altering votes and vote totals.

Oh they changed votes.  Why do you think Putin puppet Jill Stein helped pick out where to look for voter fraud in the states with recounts?  Can't find any wrong doing if you have someone on the inside pointing you away from the fraud.  I've been saying this for almost a year now.  The pieces have been there all along but now they are finally getting some light.  Don't be shocked if the republicans maintain control over everything in the midterms and I'd look for another miracle presidential win in 2020 too.  Chances are good you live in a country where your vote didn't count because a foreign government accessed our electronic voting system and changed the outcome of our election.

Well if we can prove votes were changed then that leads to whether or not we should redo the election.  Then you know the Republicans and the Trump followers will scream about it. So it'll more than likely become a legal mess if it's discovered.  Then there's the damage to our elections in the future: people will claim hacking is why their opponent won and people will stay home and not vote because they think it won't matter. So if they changed votes, we're in for a far worse ride than we are on now.
