For all the wonderers, it's Hung Fu-o-k Win, but as to how he got that name... Unless his dad named him after some guy who saved his life in 'nam, I'm finding it hard to believe.

Accreditations: I lived in Vietnam for two years. This guy doesn't even look half-and-half or Viet Kueng (foreign born, maybe mixed, maybe not).

Truly a strange tale.

I'd wager ol' Pops was an American soldier who "hit and ran", and Mom and the kid fled Vietnam around 1975 or so.  That would make him in his early 40s, which seems to fit the picture.

I can. I received a free rubber jar opener in the mail with the name Robert Harder on it. I think he was running for some local office, but it's been 20 or so years since I got it. I still have the opener because I'm never throwing that out. It's a great conversation piece when people inevitably congregate in the kitchen.

I know (or am pretty sure I know) that "Pho" is pronounced "Fa".  Unsure what "uc" does to that. I've known people with the last name "Nguyen" who pronounce it "Win" and I've known people who pronounce it differently though I can't recall the difference off hand.

Basically, I haven't a clue but we have a local restaurant named "Pho Chau" and everytime I drive by I think, and sometimes say, "Pho Chau too!"

A friend and I visited local Chinese restaurant and found the food to be awful.

Soon afterwards, we walked past their big front window and my friend said, "There's not a soul in there!"

Too late the words came out of my mouth, and I am so glad nobody inside heard me:

"There ARE souls in there!"
