I have to say, it is weird by the standards of Boulder.  I think mostly because the everyday weirdness of Boulder rarely is violent.

<csb>

When I was in middle school my church group took a day trip down to Wet 'n Wild in Orlando.  On the way home we stopped off at a gas station to go the the bathroom and grab some snacks. As another patron of the gas station walked out of the front door with a twelve pack of beer, the handle on the carton broke and all his beers hit the ground and rolled across the parking lot.  The good christian middle-schoolers opted to mock the poor guy instead of helping him out, so he had to gather his beer cans under a hail of laughter and other verbal abuse.  After he managed to track most of the beers down and toss them into the passenger seat of his car, he retrieved a 4-foot bastard sword from the trunk of his car raised it above his head and let out a blood-chilling berserker scream. The kids, in a state of unadulterated terror, scrambled for the safety of the church vans.  Satisfied, the man returned the sword to his trunk and put down a trail of rubber all the way out of the parking lot.

Yeah, as far as swords go, "samurai" swords aren't really that large. It's kind of their beauty, they more graceful and slim, yet strong and sharp. Unless it was a nodachi, those are like 3 feet long.

Yeah, every time I read the quote, I can't help but think, 'just what size do you THINK a sword is going to be...?'

A katana is a pretty normal size of sword.

Now a Scottish claymore, THAT might be of a surprising size to your normal by-stander...

Wow, that guy seriously has no idea how to use a sword, at all. Or it's 100% dull. You can see him hitting the other guy in the thigh with it and it doesn't seem to have even cut through the cloth. That's some seriously garbage edge alignment right there. And his stance and, well, everything, were beyond terrible and into the realm of "has never even seen a movie sword fight."

I mean, I guess I should be glad that violent lunatics running around with swords don't know how to use them, but it's just kinda depressing to see someone suck so much at something.

To be fair, cutting heavy cloth is not as easy as fantasy movies would lead you to believe. Especially if a sword is not properly sharpened and with a thick edge geometry. And if you strike like you're swinging a baseball bat, even hitting edge-first at a flat angle you're not going to inflict a lot of cutting damage.

Plus, as a general rule, you don't kill by slashing.  You kill by stabbing.

Oh, you can kill very effectively by slashing, if not necessarily immediately. OTOH, if the edge geometry is right and the blade well-sharpened, a good cutting weapon can do devastating disabling injuries even through cloth which might not kill for a while if ever, but which may take an opponent completely out of the fight, unlike a stab which might miss an immediately vital area and allow for a riposte by an opponent. The old 1796/1811 LC sabre was nasty for that. The 1796 HC could be just as effective if it was used by a strong man who maintained his blade edge, see Ewart at Waterloo.

Repro, of course, and it's got the incorrect swan-necked cock.  There is an original with a swan-necked cock, and a reproduction lock set was made based upon that gun, but it has since come to light that the cock on that gun was a replacement, not an original.

Still, it looks good and shoots good.  On a good day I can get all of my shots on a standard B-27 silhouette at 200 yards:

I should add that it was built partly from scratch (some of the brass work, the ramrod, the sights), partly from rough castings (the lock), and partly from completed parts (barrel, stock, some other bits and bobs).

The "not from scratch" parts came from The Rifle Shoppe:
http://therifleshoppe.com/catalog_pages/english_arms/baker_rifles.htm

And no, I didn't build it, my father did.
