Israel has besieged Gaza since 2007 and has placed restrictions on goods allowed to enter the territory, including fuel.
More than two million Palestinians living in the area have to survive on fewer than eight hours of electricity a day and power plants often struggle to keep up with demand due to a shortage of fuel, necessary parts for repairs and damage from Israeli air raids.

How big is the Gaza strip?

The territory is 41 kilometers (25 mi) long, and from 6 to 12 kilometers (3.7 to 7.5 mi) wide,

So not that big. 25 miles by 4-6 miles.
Why are they besieging it since 2007?

Gaza has since June 2007 been governed by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic organization which came to power in free elections in 2006. It has been placed under an Israeli and U.S.-led international economic and political boycott from that time onwards.

So they elected Hamas freely and are punished for it. Who is Hamas?

Hamas, as its name (Islamic Resistance Movement) implies, aims to liberate Palestine from the Israeli occupation by resisting it

Any hope?

Do you intentionally ignore the fact that Hamas is a jihadist terrorist organization calling for the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews who declared war on Israel and attacked Israel with thousands of rockets and missiles or you are not aware of it ?
You are aware that Gaza has a border with a country other than Israel which is not under Israel's control, right ?

Apparently investing in Jew murder and stealing the billions of aid money poured into Gaza, stealing building material to construct bunkers and terror tunnels instead of houses and stealing aid supplies meant for the Palestinian civilians is not a smart economic approach on Hamas' part.

You know how a terrorist organization ends up winning elections? The populace gets dicked around for a few decades by the "good guys" in Israel. Further oppressing the Palestinians in Gaza only serves to keep Hamas in power.

Both sides have plenty of blood on their hands. Pretending there's only one 'bad guy' in the situation is part of the problem. Israel just has better PR, and a superpower preventing them from facing any sort of consequences for their crimes.

I guess I'd agree this is the concept most modern governments are based on: divide and conquer. If the rich people on both sides didn't create the good guys / bad guys routine, it wouldn't take long for the rest of us to turn on them and redistribute all of their wealth.

The NUIS program document explains:

After training, the student will begin his activities. The student will do the activities in the comfort of his home, where every week he will be obligated to about 5 hours of activities for a period of one calendar year (not academic year). Students will be paid a total of NIS 7,500 [$2,000] to perform the tasks of the project, at least 5 hours weekly for a total of 240 hours of activities under the project umbrella.

What is completely missing from the program is any indication that criticism of Israel could be valid. Rather the National Union of Israeli Students apparently seeks to indoctrinate Israeli students that every criticism of Israel is "hate" and "anti-Semitism" and that the Internet should be seen as a battlefield on which they are foot soldiers.

This. The Palestinian lands are basically like having a territory run by Neo-Nazi Klukkers. There's no real negotiating room with them, because almost everything they want is hateful and destructive.

They need to end their support for their terrorist attacks, their brainwashing of children into terrorists, and their diversion of funds for food, fuel, and infrastructure into terrorist attacks. When they can go a generation without any of that, then a deal might actually be possible.

Because they spent a few decades shipping their worst fanatics to join the PLO to wipe out the Israelis, so actually letting them come back and bringing the few actual "Palestinians" with them would defeat their original purpose.

Say, I wonder who Gaza blames for the problem. Funny how the article suggests 'Israel,' but doesn't actually say...

The besieged Palestinian territory, where more than two million people live, has been suffering from an energy crisis since mid-April due to a dispute over taxes between Hamas, which rules the enclave, and West Bank-based Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Gaza's sole power plant, which supplied 60 megawatts, had previously shut down in April after it ran out of fuel. Prior to its shutdown, the Palestinian Authority removed a tax exemption on diesel fuel, doubling the price as a result.

Two weeks ago, Egypt shipped approximately 4 million litres of fuel to operate the power plant - but it was not enough to resolve the worsening crisis. Power lines built to supply electricity from Egypt have been damaged amid heavy fighting in the Sinai region.

Israel, which supplies 125 megawatts, or 30 percent of the total electricity needs of the Gaza Strip, decided last month to reduce the amount of electricity it supplies to Gaza by at least 40 percent after Abbas cut electricity funding by the Palestinian Authority.

The move was widely seen as an attempt by Abbas to step up pressure on the rival Hamas movement.

"A further increase in the length of blackouts is likely to lead to a total collapse of basic services, including critical functions in the health, water and sanitation sectors," [UN humanitarian coordinator for the occupied territories, Robert] Piper said in a statement.

"The people in Gaza should not be held hostage to this long-standing internal Palestinian dispute," he said.

Multiple attempts at reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah have failed, but the Palestinian Authority has continued to pay Israel for some of the electricity delivered to Gaza.

You conveniently leave out the fact that Hamas is a terrorist organization that fires rockets into Israel, which in turn leads to Israel invading. You conveniently leave out the fact that Hamas has total control over Gaza, so is in effect already an independent Palestinian state. You also leave out the fact that Hamas hasn't held new elections since coming to power, so Gaza isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship that came to power via a democratic election. Oh, and you ignore the fact that Hamas doesn't want independence from Israel (which they already have), but rather wants to destroy Israel. Your argument sounds great and all until confronted with the full facts.
