I can't imagine Disney allowing Game of Wars to show boobies.

Or violence?

Well, hard to go to Nar Shaddaa without it. I figure that is in play, with those two.

Before anyone biatches about over saturation, two words.....Marvel. Oh, just needed one word.

See also, Star Trek in the 1990s. Or now even, if JJ insists on plowing forward with his movies.

In the past Disney would just release their illicit content under Touchstone or Miramax but everyone knows that Star Wars is Disney now.

No kidding. DS9 and VOY are totally rewatchable at that.

When I was buying up all the Star Wars novels, I wasn't biatching about over-saturation.  This is the same thing, different format.

Don't like it?  Don't buy the books tickets.

Star Wars has always had a problem of being too limited. It shouldn't be that way, but its universe is inevitably focused around the same ideas as the films because the movies are about visual style and instantly recognizable plot elements, not substantial world-building. Fiction set in the Star Wars universe that's strayed from those elements hasn't been too well-received, by fans OR by the broader public.

Marvel's chief appeal isn't its universe... it's the characters. And their story well is deep from decades of comics they didn't decide to erase just to clear any ties to the Lucasfilm EU. (They did the smarter thing of adapting their best stories to the new cinematic context.)

Star Trek isn't a fair comparison either because it re-emerged as a syndicated show with TNG after decades of dormancy and really peaked with DS9, the first real attempt to broaden its stroytelling. Characters drove those shows and made them fun to watch. Voyager and Enterprise were less popular (and that has a lot to do with their less memorable casts), and the Abramsverse and Discovery are both novel for not being Trek so much as Star Wars derivatives that look like Trek. Abrams caricatured known characters horrendously while Discovery has none anyone cares about.

The good shows that came in the wake of Trek - Farscape, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and the like - all established their universes and characters before trying to tell their big stories. That's why their evolving plotlines led to big moments people actually cared about.

I think there's an opportunity to have a variety of different formats/genres within the upcoming movies.  Hopefully they realize that they can make some different flavors of movie to cater to different tastes, given the volume they'll have.

So the guy who wrote and directed Boring Chase: a Star Wars Story will be put in charge of a new trilogy?

We shouldn't be worried about Disney buying up Star Wars I said.

Look at what they did with Marvel I said.

Between Abrams and this hack, my interest in Star Wars is pretty much cratering at this point. The final episodes of Rebels are the only thing that I have any hope of being good

When you reach the point where you are reminiscing about the good ol' Jar Jar Bunks days it might be time reconsider your poor life choices.

Except all of the EU material was hamstrung by the fact that a major part of the central story was off-limits.  They weren't allowed to go back and talk about what happened that caused Anakin to become Vader.  They could dance around the edge of the story from time to time, but they had to move forward with certain limitations.  Marvel didn't have to worry about Stan Lee cordoning off a giant section of plot in the middle of their comic universe.

That was the main reason Timothy Zahn wrote off Kenobi's Force spirit in the first pages of the first proper EU novel - it would have made zero sense if Luke didn't ask, "Hey Ben, what the fark exactly happened to my parents, anyway?"  A whole lot of writers would end up looking as foolish as Alan Dean Foster (not that Barbara Hambly or Vonda McIntyre needed held with that).

Honestly, it was the best solution going forward, to wipe out the old EU and start over.  Yes, we lost Shadows of the Empire and Courtship of Princess Leia.  But we also got rid of the Sun Crusher, clones with extra vowels, Callista, and the entire Jedi Prince series.

And we've already gotten back Thrawn, the YT-2400, and Interdictor cruisers, among other things.  I'd say we've come out ahead so far.

How about Jar Jar and his love affair with Annie, a tough orphan who has a hard knock life.

Well then they just have to have the balls to go beyond the Skywalker story like Star Trek did. When Star Trek: TNG came out, no one was in the mood to see an old, Shakespearean tea sipping captain in a bridge that looked like someone's living room. But it took off. Star Wars can do the same (not exactly the same). They just have to have the balls to do it.

Then again Trek went back to the Kirk/Spock well but that was like 30 years of original stuff later.

Great!  I am happy.  Some will be blah, some will be amazing.

This is what i am trying to tell people who constantly biatch that we don't know enough about Snoke or the Knights of Ren -- it's coming.  Be patient.  At some point in the future, they will get to complain that they are sick of the Knights of Ren, that a new mysterious character being introduced as a former Knight of Ren -- meh, it's been done before!

I am currently working on two massive videos explaining in great detail why The Last Jedi is great and its detractors are lame.  This is important somehow.
