This is Taliban shiat, but it's the kind of stuff poor and stupid people do to their daughters the world over.  You just think it's normal because you live in Ohio.

2018-02-07 08:29:23 AM
No one should be punished for getting highlights in their hair.

2018-02-07 08:31:48 AM
Let me ask you something, subby.  Was the punishment intended to cause mental anguish and/or trauma to the child?

If the answer is yes...

There's a fine line between discipline, punishment, and abuse.  The goal shouldn't be to hurt your kids, ever.

If it's child abuse, a bulk of young boys in the late 60 were abused. Sometimes not that young.

It was only meant to shame her for using her femininity to tempt young men.  If women were forced by government to wear Burkas the way God intended, we wouldn't have these types of problems.

Yes. It's abusive and controlling.

They probably did it so she would be publicly humiliated.  So, yes, it's abusive.

LOL at "abusive and controlling" Jesus how have we gotten to where not having the perfect hairstyle is abuse. Yes, shiatty, yes, not perfect parenting, but abusive? Idiots.

2018-02-07 10:57:22 AM
It is abusive when using your daughter as a shuttlecock in a passive/aggressive battle with your ex-wife.

2018-02-07 10:57:47 AM
I'm not sure it's technically abuse, but he crossed a line that he'll never come back from.  She is going to resent and remember this for the rest of her life. I don't think their relationship will ever be the same and she shouldn't be left alone with him without supervision going forward.

It's made worse by the fact that there was no offense or infraction that would merit punishment to begin with.  Her mother got them for her.

2018-02-07 10:58:47 AM
Is it abuse?  Probably not.

Is it a way to tell her that she doesn't control her own body even in trivial ways?  Yup.

Let your kid have stupid hair styles if they want, save those fights for things like tattoos and piercings.

What the hell? She just said 'okay'.  I was expecting some forced farked up caught under a weed wacker shiat, not an actual professional haircut. She didn't protest at all? Was this some religious crap? I don't understand any of this.

2018-02-07 10:59:16 AM
If the dad disagreed with his ex over his daughter, his problem is with his ex and not his daughter.  Punishing his daughter for something his ex allowed is abuse especially since lopping off the hair was an extreme remedy to a very minor, temporary act.

2018-02-07 10:59:23 AM
Sorry pops. All the things you're afraid she's doing? You better believe she'll be doing them now.

It's called spite, and teenagers are full of it.

Also, you're an asshole.

/father to a wonderful daughter. Of course I'm terrified for her. Your job is to help her be the best she can. Trust and support are going to help her make good decisions, not psychological abuse.

With this mentality how long before the military is is sued? They force you to cut your hair, and then you are subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

It is farking haircut.

This is where you bring in the grandparents for some of that old school wisdom: "Boy, what the fark did you do to my grandchild and why?"

Depends on the reasoning and purpose.  If you've got a lazy kid who refuses to wash their hair and is just generally unhygienic, then sure, cut it off until they learn to take care of themselves.  The girl in TFA was NOT doing anything like that though, so the "punishment" was really just a pure attempt to control her and stop her from growing up.

2018-02-07 11:00:56 AM
Sounds like daddy is in love.

2018-02-07 11:01:22 AM
Well, hell, I guess the Catholic school system abused me by making me shave every day too. I guess even young men aren't allowed to control their bodies either.

/You're all idiots if you think this is even remotely near the abuse spectrum

2018-02-07 11:01:26 AM
Absolutely nope, he's entitled to require her to chop off all her hair. I was expecting to see a bald head, but it seems quite attractively styled.

2018-02-07 11:01:27 AM
I'll give you 5-to-1 odds that the dad was also doing this to get back at his ex-wife for something.

2018-02-07 11:02:14 AM
I don't know what happened there, but:

If your parent tells you "Don't do 'X' or you'll be in trouble." and you go and do 'X' then you can expect to be in trouble.

It's just your hair, it grows back.  Maybe it's a good lesson for that girl to learn that there's more to life than hair.

My wife and I make our son get haircuts because he just wouldn't bother otherwise.  Does that make us abusers?  My daughter had a habit of chewing on her hair and I told her many many times to stop or I'd cut it off.  She didn't stop and it got cut off.  It's better to have short hair than gross smelly hair.  Is that abusive?

I'm Chinese-American.

If I were to have kids and give them "lucky" haircuts traditional for children in China, I'm sure somebody would report me for child abuse:

If my dad gave me $3 for a haircut ($2.50 plus tip) and I came back without either, he would put a chair on the back porch and mom would cut my hair.  All the neighbor kids would turn out and laugh as I got a buzz cut.

Then, the other parents thought this was a great idea and we'd all take turns watching some kid get his haircut.

2018-02-07 11:03:01 AM
Sounds like two divorced assholes, with the daughter caught in the middle.

This.

tdyak: I knew a LOT of "abused" kids when I was growing up, if a haircut like this is abuse.

The haircut isn't the point, the emotional impact on the daughter and ex are the point. This wasn't done for some bullshiat parenting reason, this was done out of malice.

The haircut isn't necessarily abusive, but rather the expected consequences.

First comes the highlights, then next thing you know she's on the pipe and turning tricks.

Snort: It is abusive when using your daughter as a shuttlecock in a passive/aggressive battle with your ex-wife.

Agreed, but it often is done intentionally by both parties. I have zero doubt biological mom is as big a b*tch as dad is a c*ck. I'm fairly certain mom knew dad didn't like the idea of highlights but, rather than co-parent and behave like an adult, she said fark it and did the passive-aggressive thing herself.

The problem with co-parenting is you actually have to be an adult and communicate. Incidentally, it's not child abuse, but it is a co-parenting fail. Mom and dad should both have to go to CCITM classes, because this poor kid deserves better than both of them.

An Object Lesson in punishing your children with humiliation

Trump: You are getting a dopey hair cut as punishment for being a rich spoiled brat and bad-mouthing everybody who isn't richer than you.

Donnie Two Scoops: Aw, Daaaaad. Everybody will laugh at me and point and say I am an idiot and uncool.

(There never say I showed no sympathy for The Trumpster.)

Dad is a dick.

I can't prove it but I'm gonna guess that there is abuse going on here on some level.  There is no way a normal 15 year old who is that mortified to have a short haircut would willingly go get a short haircut without putting up a fight unless she was afraid of what dad might do if she doesn't meekly go along with it.

Also WTF is with the fire department putting them on leave? I'm pretty sure that being a shiatty parent doesn't impair your ability to fight fires.  Employers needs to be reminded of the difference between public and private lives.

I grew up in an army town and a lot of the boys with soldier parents got buzzed as a punishment.  The intent was definitely to humiliate the kids.

2018-02-07 11:06:46 AM
Yes, Subby, it's extreme and uncalled for, particularly if she had it done with the permission of her mother. If the father / step mother had such strenuous objections they had other options.

Also, the kid is a teenager not 10, and highlights are not uncommon for people this age. I'd love to know the source of their objection. Are they fundie nutbags or just deluded idiots fighting the tide of their child's inevitable maturation? I let my son color his hair when he was 13 but then again I don't suffer from the delusion that it's 1950.

Was it a spanking that lasted 6 mos? Cause that's at least how long it'll take for her hair to grow back as long has she had it.
