40% of the market is controlled by less than 1% of the people. 70% of the market is controlled by only a bit more.

These people don't panic because whenever the minnows do, they just wait and gobble up even more than what they have.

That's the real reason the market keeps going up and has a floor, because it's concentrating into fewer and fewer hands.

He's...actually not wrong, amazingly.  The crash happened because the economy is "overheating" and the markets are afraid that the Fed will raise interest rates.

The requisite "Don't panic, keep your money in the market!" article that allows the actual investor class to get out of the market ahead of the unwashed masses.

As if the market is actually a rational reflection of economic strength and not just the biggest casino in the world.

I'd buy Ether instead. It's a better technology, Bitcoin is stagnating, IMO. But as always, do your own research.

I've listened to about 100 earnings calls.  I knew this is what would happen.

If they make their numbers, then "our initiatives are working" and "the actions we put in place are showing results".

If they don't make their numbers, then the problem is "industry forces" and "broader economic trends".

Regardless, at the end of the call you'll always hear that "customers are excited by our new products" and "we anticipate great things in the next year".

They're currencies.  Shouldn't they stagnate?  I haven't seen many advances in dollars or swiss francs in the last 50 years, but they seem to still be useful.

Nah, give trillions in tax cuts to rich people instead of using that money to rebuild infrastructure.

The market is up 260 right now.  Why panic?  I rarely check it unless there is an article posted on Fark.  Invest your money, and stop panicking every time the market goes down.  In the long run, you will make money.  Everything will be ok.

The stocks on the market go up and down,
Up and down, up and down
The stocks on the market go up and down,
Depending on lots of things.

The traders on the market go "Buy and sell,"
"Buy and sell, buy and sell"
The traders on the market go "Buy and sell"
Depending on their short term interests.

The advisors for the poor say "Buy and hold,"
"Buy and hold, buy and hold,"
The advisors for the poor say "Buy and hold,"
Because they're paid a percentage.

The advisors for the banks say "Loans and bonds,"
"Loans and bonds, loans and bonds,"
The advisors for the banks say "Loans and bonds,"
Because they're on salaries.

Managers for hedge funds say "Long and short,"
"Long and short, long and short,"
Managers for hedge funds say "Long and short,"
Because they're paid in stock.

BeesNuts: As if the market is actually a rational reflection of economic strength and not just the biggest casino in the world.

Casinos don't pay out an average of +8% over a 100-year span. Yes, there is manipulation in the stock market, and yes, many stock valuations are ephemeral and supported more by mass psychology than fundamentals. But so is the greenback and the real estate market and everything else. The fact is, long-term buy-and-hold is a strategy that has proven results that outpace any other investment strategy over a decade.

DanInKansas: Isn't being told not to panic a reliable indication that things aren't going well?

This.  During the birth of my first child/daughter, I was at my wife's side and she was struggling.  My daughter had a little heart rate sensor on the top of her head (in utero) hooked up to a display.  The plotted line would rise and dip as my wife was being coached.  I was doing OK mentally and being calm and supportive.  The plotted line dipped a bit - I thought nothing of it.   Then the doctor said to me   "don't panic".  I was like WTF?  What do you mean not to panic ?!  That's when I knew something was really wrong (and we we later found out it was serious).

However, everything worked out and we had a healthy baby.

Panicking and selling just ensures you are losing money and wall street traders are winning. Only fool's sell during a downturn
