The Leafs proved against the Ducks they can skate with any team. The Preds are going to give us a good one, though.

I didn't think so & apart from the Ducks having a miserable road trip when points are really needed, really didn't care.

We just got hit with an ice storm last night (379 school/business closings this morning at the height of the chaos) & got stuck at home (which granted is better than stuck at the store or something) & thus grumpy/curmudgeonly today.

But thanks.

Last night I think a lot of the games were on PPV or subscription channels, too. That probably hurts the viewership among us Fark Poors.
Wednesday night is typically almost as good as Saturday in terms of network Hockey coverage.

In hockey news, the sweater Darryl Sittler wore on his ten point night(42 years ago today) has been found.  It's estimated to go for between 250-600k at auction.  Here's hoping the Leafs just throw a truckload of cash at the holders to keep it away from those vultures with the scissors.

Rumor is the owners were not happy with their treatment at Sochi and the IIHFs refusal to insure players.  I'm still betting Beijing will have the NHL though.

Plus, losing exposure to the Korean market doesn't bother the NHL. But they DO want the Chinese market.

Yeah, but I think the NHL would have liked the exposure from it being in Asia and Pyeongchang is only an hour ahead of Beijing and Shanghai.

Sure they would have liked the exposure but not at the expense of the owners (very legitimate) concerns over their assets (players) being used mid season with no compensation or even insurance against injury.  For those teams going to/making a run at the playoffs there's a high potential of loss of momentum/players injured-worn down/etc, leading to loss of attendance, merch sales, concessions, etc.  Sitting this one out gives the league a much stronger bargaining position with the IOC in 2-3 years.

Not that I wouldn't mind the Olympics going back to pure amateur status but those days are long past (given all the other leagues in the world needing their rosters filled with whatever talent they can find).

_/and yes I feel dirty sticking up for NHL owners but that says more about the IOC's well documented crap than anything...

Yep, it's hard to side with the owners about anything. On the IOC side of the argument, it's making special arrangements (financial, specifically) for one sport and not for any of the others. There aren't any other professional team sports in the Winter Olympics, are there?

A lot of the sports do have pro tours (skiing, curling, snowboarding, etc.), but no where near hockey's money or profile.

But not situations where you have players playing for an owner, like soccer and basketball. If a skier breaks their leg in the Olympics, it only financially affects themselves.

I don't think so, certainly none with the high salaries that hockey players get (basketball in the summer?).  And yes I can see the IOC not wanting to favor a particular sport/event as well.  I don't know, the IOC paying for disability insurance for all athletes perhaps?  Of course then you get someone from some country without all the subsidized training/living expenses paid saying "Hmmm, if I were to 'accidently' crash coming off of this jump (as I'm not going to finish higher than 20th no matter how well I do) and claim to be hurt, I could get a settlement that would pay my expenses for 10 years...".

No idea what the solution is but sadly there's just too much money involved now for corruption not to be a major factor in whatever is worked out for whatever sport/s
