That's the scary bit about Fundagelicals. They're REALLY looking forward to Armageddon, and they think it wd be a great idea to give God a helping hand by making it happen.

I enjoyed The Purge movies. They weren't "good" movies, but they managed to be interesting. At the same time, I can't help but feel that he's played Trump's hand for him...

They are a death cult. They hate life and everything on the planet that God created.

That's basically what the everyone in the GOP wants. The rich hate the poor and the poor hate themselves, thinking they're virtuous and will finally get to use their guns on other humans.

I suspect (hope), it would be more like Jericho. Small communities banding together for protection and mutual survival.

Humans are basically social creatures and we form tribes readily.

Would some of those tribes be of the marauding cannibal variety? Sure but for the most part, people in this country have neither the skill set nor the mentality to be full time post apocalyptic raiders

Sorry, I thought the sarcasm was obvious.  Whether or not someone is a mock-worthy moron has nothing to do with race, religion, education, or economic class.

Well he's an easy target and all but the headline is disjoint from the article, reality, and Ben Carson.
It encodes about as much science awareness as Carson does and about as much humor as a Ben Garrison comic. You know, the "look, I'm going to mock someone I don't like, because I don't like him, so it must be funny, hurr durr durr".

I'm not that worried about a nuclear EMP event. First of all, critical infrastructure is already built to withstand lightning strikes, which are more intense than a distant EMP, and secondly, cars, which have lots of electronics, usually have metal frames, which should provide electrical protection just as they do from lightning strikes. In general, short wires are less affected, so ordinary electronics are not that vulnerable, especially if they happened to be turned off at the time.

So I don't believe we would instantly go back to the stone age.

Oh, and:

"the United States Space Command commissioned science educator Bill Nye to produce a video called "Hollywood vs. EMP" so that highly inaccurate Hollywood fiction would not confuse those who must deal with real EMP events.[51] The U.S. Space Command video is not available to the general public."

I find it amusing that there is an entire mod with the sole purpose of putting the settlement thingy behind a dialogue option so you can talk to him normally.

They are desperate. They have invested so much time and money into the church and have yet to receive a payout. It's difficult for them to think about what else they could have done with all those sunday offerings. Armageddon is their only hope.

If there's anyone I'd turn to for information about an EMP it's a former Navy Seal.  He's big and brawny and brave so he must know all about rockets, electrical grids and nuclear physics.

There is an old middle silo in the Midwest where you can reserve a space for when social upheaval gets real. For protection they are going to have hired guards.

They are planning to pay armed men to guard them from the bandits roaming the countryside after the breakdown of society, with US dollars, when people will be killing for candy bars.

I loved Damnation Alley as a kid, but I have a hard time enjoying the movie now that Chris Avellone admitted it was a major inspiration for the Lonesome Road DLC.  Ulysses is the avatar of every wannabe deep thinker who took a freshman philosophy course and thinks he's the first person ever to conceptualize anarcho-primitivism.

If you haven't, try to get a hold of the original novel by Roger Zelazny. I found an edition for Kindle, though I suspect it's a pirated edition. Basically only the bare storyline of the two coasts and the journey between them made it into the film. The book is a whole 'nuther thing, well worth the read.

To be a surgeon, you've got to be a doctor. Which means 4 years of med school. Which means getting into med school. Which means great MCATs. Which means 4 years of doing well in really hard courses in undergrad.

Carson is or was genuinely smart. Which means that becoming that dumb that quickly is possible for any of us.

Be careful out there.

Carson is good at one thing - neurosurgery.

He is not good at public policy (and housing policy specifically... oops), governance, public speaking (on any topic other than neurosurgery), history, critical thought (on things outside neurosurgery), campaigning, debating, partisanship, comparative religion -- really, anything that isn't neurosurgery.

I wouldn't want NdGT picking my stock portfolio or Bill Gates fixing my car.

// or that guy from Grandma's Boy
// good at making video games (arguably), doesn't know who invented the helicopter
// Igor Sikorsky, FYI (knew that without looking it up)

The book or the movie?

As a kid I wished the movie would have had the giant gilla monster, the rattlesnake as thick around as a trash can, the enormous swarm of enormous bats and the battles against motorcycle gangs.
Now as an adult I would like those plus a more faithful to the book Hell Tanner who goes from a criminal to the guy who pushes on to save some people he doesn't even know and he doesn't even know if they are still alive. Talk about a character arc.
