Seattle keeps whining, but every article lists San Jose, CA as far worse.  Why do fans of Seattle like to whine, and why does this sound so familiar?  Oh, right...

I lived in Colorado in the early 90s where you would frequently see "Californians go home" bumper stickers.  People wining about Californians isn't a new thing.

This. People just love hating on Californians, even other Californians. In the case of San Jose, it manifests itself as an internal self loathing.

Agreed, but the headline is not about Californians moving to Seattle, since it is offering Cali as a destination instead of Seattle.

There is not a single article on Fark about San Jose real estate prices or rent, but there is at least one a month on Seattle.

My point is, no other city whines this much, even though they are not the worst market.

I would love to live in Seattle.  At least I would love to live in the Seattle of 20 years ago.  I hear it's quite different now.

Also don't come to Colorado.  We have enough people in Colorado.

Horse, barn door.

It's too late by about 5 years to complain, or do the best things to actually protect and support affordable housing. The hip parts of CA are about 10+ years late. Until everyone makes more like what tech workers make or tech workers make more like what other people make, this will keep happening. Or we can put up much more effort to curing the ills caused by inequality, but it's not going to be easy when you're already this deep.

Two tiered societies suck but if you don't have policies in place to prevent them then that is where you will end up.

Hah, I submitted all of those.

It's less a conspiracy of whiners than it is that I hit local news and try* to make funny headlines from whatever I find.  If I happened to live in San Jose, all the articles would be about that place instead.

Left the Seattle area (Lynnwood) about four months ago for San Diego.  Finding San Diego to be a lot like Seattle of 20 years ago, plus sunshine.  :)

/Got nine offers on our house the first weekend it was on the market, accepted one almost $50k over asking.

What Makes a Neighborhood Hot
Redfin's Hottest Neighborhoods is a prediction based on the most recent growth we've seen in page views and favorites on Redfin.com. We checked in with Redfin agents around the country to find out what's been driving these trends.

So, if 10 people looked at houses there last year and 50 did this year, then that's probably "hot" although it doesn't mean much.  I looked in Atlanta, and it's all decrepit west side neighborhoods.  While I'm sure investors are skulking around looking to grab land on the cheap and hold for 15 years in the hope gentrification moves that way, that doesn't resonate with the majority of homebuyers.

Only $39,000!

There's no room in any part of California where there are any jobs at all and no one wants to live in the high crime and still high rent places without jobs.

/ I'm living in a flea-infested over-priced damp dark place the costs over double what I paid for a better place in 2015.

Dr.Fey

You posted a bunch of links and clearly feel strongly about this so I started to write a long reply and then it occurred to me that what you think about this doesn't matter. Then I realized what I think doesn't matter either but I hit the add comment button anyway.

The nice thing about san jose is there are fewer bart escalators than in SF.  That means less of them grind to a halt from all the bum poo that gums up the inner workings!

Dr.Fey: My point is, no other city whines this much, even though they are not the worst market.

What is the ratio of, say, Denver-area news stations reporting on increasing real estate costs, versus Seattle-area news stations?  I see Seattle real estate stuff posted on Fark more often than other places, but that, in itself, isn't very meaningful, without comparative data.

/in my experience, most people in Seattle really don't care that much either way, aside for being grumpy about their property taxes going up

Don't be so rational.  I'm just trying to incite comment.  Seriously, you would think a city that won three Super Bowls and took a 3-1 lead on Golden State in the Western Conference Finals would have less to whine about.

That should be a lot of fun.  Chucky versus Pete (maybe not as much as Harbaugh vs Pete used to be, but I'll take it).  Brand new stadium, too.

Okay, you're on.  Have to make a pre-game Fark party (night before, not morning of).

I'll see if I can make it to that.  I'm meeting up with a friend of mine who has Raiders season tickets, and he was nice enough to sell one to me.  (He will sell it to me...he doesn't have them yet.)  It's going to be something else...he was born in England, and other guys coming with us to the game are his cousins.

This is the hotel I booked...we're splitting rooms, so the cost won't be too bad.  And it's only about 6 miles from the stadium:

The latest data, from the Seattle Times. Home values are up nearly 20% YoY in Seattle proper.

Or in other words, in places like the Eastside or North King County (outside of the city) home prices are rising at a rate of nearly $400. Every. Single. Day.
