Yep. Enjoyed that. Can't wait until Big Daddy reverse engineers some of that alien technology into his next car.

It's MOPAR or it's no car.

Thanks subby.  My father used to tell stories of Big Daddy.  If the draft hadn't sucked him into a military career, my father would have loved to keep being a gear head and follow Big Daddy.

As it was, my father never stopped working on cars.  His best weekends were spent out front of the garage taking apart an engine.  Most days when I was helping him out, he'd have some story of racing. Don was always apart of story before we finished cleaning the tools and putting them away.

Hardee Har Har. This about a man and a production car. Not what the people west of Houston can do to a GM product... But then again, they can also get 1k + HP from a HEMI too. So it's a moot point.

If you ever find yourself in Ocala, FL and are a gearhead, you HAVE to go to his museum.  He's usually there and if the timing is right, he will talk your ear off about any number of subjects.  One of the greatest 2 hours I've ever spent.

and if you haven't seen it, here's the explosion that took off part of his foot...

It's a fun visit. There and make sure to hop by Moroso out off the Bee-Line too.  Awesome history and always lots of good stories

Years ago I was driving through Florida and I stopped at his drag racing museum. If I recall, there was a place nearby that would sell you deep fried alligator.

Isn't that the case pretty much everywhere in FL?

Moroso is PBIR now. An investment group bought the track years ago and renovated it. It's not the dump it used to be, for better or worse.

I still cannot believe R&T opted for red, white and black for their new livery. especially a red banner with a white circle and a black logo in the middle. I'm pretty sure that design went out of fashion in 1945.

Don Garlits is the man.

Met him a few times at the track. Always cordial and friendly, but at the same time always paid close attention to the work on the car.

That's not surprising. I know the guy who is the head of the holding company who currently owns it. He got into it as a pet-project to see if he could make money on it, but he ran it the wrong way.

As long as they are open next Tuesday for the open road course event, it's all good.

"This article originally appeared in the February, 2018 issue of R&T. - Ed."

When I was a kid I'd read my dad's R&T, Motor Trend and Autoweek subscriptions cover to cover. I always thought it peculiar that the same guy that interjected in the reader mailroom responses for each magazine was named Ed. Maybe even the same guy! Nice to know he's still around.
