Who pulls out that play when their up 21-0?  You made a very powerful enemy today, Westlake...or should I say WEASLESNAKE?

Of course it was nothing new - the Patriots tried to run it earlier in the game

Yep. That's the same as 4th and goal in the Super Bowl against the one of the best dynasties in sports history. Totally the same.

Bears ran it a few years ago against the Vikings (in the new stadium incidentally).  Eagles had that tape and made it theirs.  I believe there was a Deadspin blurb about it.

IMO the great thing about that play was that they called it on a fourth down with the half coming up*. They weren't willing to settle for the points, and instead wanted not just points, but to humiliate the Patriots and kill their morale. That's why I thought was awesome.

* In other words, the field position wasn't as important as if the Pats had enough time to march down the field.

The scenario doesn't change the Xs and Os. Hell, we ran a slight variation of that play out of the wing t in my high school team 20 years ago. It was a great play but not really something brand new.

I blame the bad throw more than the missed catch, but whatever.  Brady hatred is blinding.

Yeah, it was overthrown by just a tad. Would've been a good catch if he had come down with it... was frustrating hearing the announcers jump to "maybe it's because of the stitches in his hand?!" instead of "that ball was just barely at Brady's fingertips with his arms completely outstretched." He was wide open, just put the ball on his body.

Subby is the only one suggesting anyone thought it was 'new'. Hell, the Pats ran a variation of it earlier in the game. It was the circumstances in which the Eagles ran it that is the big deal. Balls. Big ones.

It may not be new, but it was delicious. Especially as the Patriots ran a similar play earlier and Brady failed to make the catch.

It's a well-traveled play.  The moment when Foles went up to the right side of the line, two people watching the game at our house said "direct snap" - the only question was whether it was going to develop into a jet sweep, reverse, toss back, etc.

So farking what?  Nobody is saying the play was original.

But everybody is saying that is took huge brass ones to run the play 4th & Goal agains the Patriots in the effing Super Bowl.

IIRC, the Bears borrowed the play from Clemson or Oregon a few years before that.

So he can't run any faster? If he picked up the pace just a tiny bit he catches it. Either he is that slow or that uncoordinated or both.

Nothing better than running that play and scoring after the Patriots just botched it.

The Pats ran the same play vs. the Chip Kelly Eagles a few years ago and it gained like 35 yards, just didn't work out this time. Also between these two plays and the Mariota-to-Mariota play i'm liking how QB's becoming WR's in the playoffs was a thing this year.
