"This summer, you'll believe a hundred superheroes can walk."

Seriously, was there anything else in that trailer other than everyone walking in slow motion? The movie should be titled "Avengers: Infinity Stroll".

So at the end of both trailers they show bucky with a rifle, so why is he charging with the rest of them to get into melee range? Why not find some high ground or a tree and, you know, SHOOT THEM? The bad guys don't appear to have any ranged weapons. The whole situation seems like it calls for some heavy machine guns and mortars, not fisticuffs. I hope that gets explained in the movie.

That's either going to be messy as hell or an amazing popcorn movie (possibly both - see Fifth Element)

Isn't the whole point of heroes is that they generally fight in manly and heroic ways? Very few use guns. Not much of a movie if they firebomb everything. Otherwise you just get Battle: Los Angeles.

They're fighting an alien horde with the fate of the universe at stake.  And Stark has shown he's not above using inventive kinetic solutions on murderous mooks.

I'm still hung up on the fact that Thor lost an eye.  In that scene in Ragnarok, he was impaled in the spine right before he lost the eye and he recovered quickly from that.  Why didn't he bounce back with the eye?

I don't know, it seems like they're just throwing every single character they've got into this one, which seems like a desperate ploy.  I just hope it's better than Ultron

It could depend on whether it's damaged or foment entirely. Ignorance damaged it could regenerate. If it's gone entirely then it's not coming back.

It may also depend on who gave him the wound. Since it was his sister, that may also have something to do with it. (Like the rule in Harry Potter that injuries caused by dark magic cannot be fully repaired.)

They've been building to this since they introduced the Tesseract in first Thor and Captain America films, making it clear they're going for the Infinity Stone story.  Everyone has known since 2011 that this was the end result that was coming - everyone vs. a god-like, Infinity Stone-powered Thanos.

I'm not sure how it feels like a desperate ploy.  It's one of the longest and most meticulously planned arcs in movie history, spanning most of the 17 films they've released so far.  It's literally what MCU fans have been waiting for since this whole train got rolling.

Yeah, that was a pretty stupid statement to make.  I imagine them back when the Avengers trailer came out going "I don't know...putting Cap and Iron Man on a team with the Hulk and Thor? Seems like they're getting desperate."

If you don't know what the Infinity War is and you don't know that they've literally been setting the stage for it the entire time, then you haven't been paying attention.  For all the heroes in this movie, there were 10 times as many in the actual comic arc.

I admit I've only followed the movies and I loved the first Avengers that had a mix of characters.  I also liked pretty much every other Marvel and DC movie that's come out.  I've loved superhero movies ever since the first Superman movie came out in '78.  But even if this is following the comic arc it just feels like too many cooks in the kitchen.

I'm not the only one asking the question how many superheroes is too many?

2018-02-06 10:02:57 AM
I'll definitely see it eventually, but the last Avengers movie was meh, and the trailers haven't really piqued my interest; they pretty much say "Come watch more of the same, you'll see it anyway so here's just a bunch of shots of all the people in the movie."

2018-02-06 10:05:36 AM

Alphax: And it's not the end of the series, either. Thanos isn't going down in this one.

They've been obfuscating the 4th Avengers film for a while (first calling it a second Infinity War movie, then pulling the title), but it's pretty clear it's going to be a continuation.  They're trying to be careful to state that they're two very separate movies, not a single story cut in half.  But again, that's the usual hedging when they do stuff like this.  They filmed them back to back, and likely contracted everyone on both as a single unit.

It's safe to say that Thanos is going to be the focal point of both, but something highly unexpected is going to get thrown in to make the break feel natural.  They're going to kill (or otherwise remove) a lot of characters by the time Avengers 4 is done.  Spacing it out is a good idea.

idrow: But even if this is following the comic arc it just feels like too many cooks in the kitchen.I'm not the only one asking the question how many superheroes is too many?

There's a difference between having "too many superheroes" in a move and "feeling desperate".  These movies have been working to try to get to the scale of the comics for a long time.  Having more than 3 highly powerful heroes (or villains) in a movie has generally gone poorly for the genre.  The MCU is the first to make it feel like it works.  Opinions go both ways on how good they are, but Avengers, Ultron, and Civil War had perfectly reasonable flow, and characters haven't been particularly diminished by having them together.

Too much in a movie?  Reasonable suggestion.  "Desperation"?  Completely incorrect, as this has been their intent for many years, and they've projected that intent from day one.

I, for one, am looking forward to the banter between Tony and Rocket, which was legendary in the comics.  The only one that could out-snark Stark.

Maybe it's because I grew up reading Marvel silver age comics (the 60s into the early 70s) and I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get so many Marvel comic characters on the big screen, but the only movies I have not liked are the Hulk solo ones and Daredevil. I think some comic book movie fans are getting a little jaded. Not every MCU movie is gonna be a based loaded homer. But seeing Doctor Strange, the Vision, Quicksilver, Nick Fury, etc etc etc on the screen with top notch production values? I mean, I thought I had died and gone to geek heaven when LOTR was filmed. I'm sure I am easy to please compared to others, and I accept that, but shiat, I even liked Thomas Jane's Punisher movie.

As for the new Avengers movie, just the scene when the Guardians show up will be enough for me!

2018-02-06 12:08:11 PM
I'll probably see this, but I'm not really excited for it. A bit worn thin on the genre.

I think the problem for me is how fast and often they've ratcheted up the stakes to END OF THE WORLD during the series of movies.

And you don't get the feeling for lasting consequences from this.

You'd expect at this point that every human is walking around in a daze with PTSD. How you can live a normal life when at any moment something is going to come and level your city?

I think this is something the DC movies tried to talk about, but it was executed poorly, but the idea is good in my opinion.

These heroes flying around and these earth-shattering events would totally screw up the world as we know it, but the Marvel universe seems to limit the talk to government's reaction. It doesn't bring it home.

I think this was why Age of Ultron didn't work. The first Avengers movie had pretty significant consequences for the world, as did Winter Soldier and Civil War. Others like Ant-Man and Homecoming didn't really need to, and Doctor Strange is supposed to be happening without our notice. But Age of Ultron should have changed the world... but didn't. While having some great moments, it was way too much story with too little impact.

But I loved Winter Soldier and enjoyed Civil War, so the Russo brothers have my faith for Infinity War.
