Dow down 4.72%
Nasdaq down 1.96%

In normal numbers, those are -665.7 and -144.9.

Is this just a market adjustment?

Remember that in late 2007 there was already big Fed action buying up toxic home loan assets even as the Dow hit record highs. The economy was slowing and corporate earnings were weakening. Those are not good signs for the market, although I fully recognize that we're looking at it in hindsight.

Right now earnings are actually quite good, and economic growth is strong. The concern seems to be more focused on rising interest rates and possible inflation (rising wage numbers came up strong last week). Rates have been dirt cheap for a long time, and the 30+ year bull market in bonds may be winding down a bit. That would likely result in a cheaper stock market as people no longer need to seek any last bit of return they can find in equities.

So, what I'm saying is that the economy looks ok right now, both domestically and globally. Absent a major shock, this is probably just normal stock market volatility (666 points ain't what it used to be anyway). A 10-20% decline would be quite healthy for the market, actually, so I wouldn't hate to see Dow 21,000 by summertime as long as economic growth remains solid.

Why? The answer to that question is what should scare anyone investing in today's market.

It's going to be a crazy month.  Some stocks will go up, some stocks will go down.  Some stocks will pay dividends while others have none.  And that one stock you have invested in will go "Wee wee wee" all the way to zero.

Well, at any age, it could be another "I don't retire for another 20 years" moment...you just wouldn't be glad about it necessarily.

Nothing inspires confidence in markets like a government that is ready to shutdown on Thursday, hinging on a "promise" from Mitch McConnell and random talk of walking away from NAFTA and other trade/international agreements, and nuclear strikes from the clown in chief, who, BTW, may be indicted soon.  You may also note that the new chief of the Fed was picked by the same clown, who only hires the "best people."

Trying to predict the market is impossible. Don't listen to pundits. Anything they know and report is already priced into stock prices.

Vaginosilicosis: Then we start getting bad job numbers in the fall, realize that the average person buying a $400k house was a bad idea and Trumps anti trade stances are going to gut us like a hog and we will be at $16.5k by July 2019.

Where is that coming from? The banks aren't exactly rushing to lend money on houses people can't afford these days.

Really?  So the inflated housing market and low supply isn't actually a thing?   This isn't 2011, getting a loan is ez pz again.

Low supply is certainly a thing. You may recall from econ 101 what low supply does to prices.

What I'm saying is own a house and some rental housing and I do employment verifications. The current employment verifications are thorough and redundant and way more stringent than back in 2007-2009 - I did one just last thursday. I usually get a call for a verbal - then a week or two later I have to do a written one specifying income level for three years and document OT and bonus. Then I usually get a final call the day before signing to make sure there have been no changes.

You can carp about housing prices if you like but they'll drop as soon as market conditions change. If unemployment goes way up you'll see fewer buyers and an accompanying rise in inventory which will put downward pressure on prices. Duh. But as long as you have a lot of buyers picking over a small amount of inventory prices won't be dropping.
