In high school in the late 80s, we had some dumb assembly one day to watch a traveling performance put on by some college, probably as a recruitment thing.  As we were all sitting there waiting for them to get their act together as they milled around moving chairs and such, with no intro or anything, one by one the performers started making sounds.  It was pretty much beatboxing, building on each other and finally getting our attention as it turned into the most awesome rendition of that song I've ever heard.  It was part hip-hop, part Ladysmith BM, part pure fluorescent colored 80s awesomeness.  By the end of that song, they had all 400 of the student body's awe and undivided attention, but I guess they shot their wad too soon because I have no idea who those people were now.  I'll never hear it again.

So whenever I hear the song now, its earworminess is pretty much overridden by this memory, which at least helped give me an appreciation for the ephemeral nature of live performances.  Sometimes you just had to be there.

"South Detroit" doesn't mean "south of Detroit." It means "the southern part of Detroit," of which there is plenty. Besides, "just a city boy, born and raised in Mexicantown" doesn't really rhyme.

Wait we are fact checking 80's pop songs. Karma does not in fact come from a chameleon.  It was only an okay day for a white wedding. Science itself has never blinded anyone. There are many types of rain but purple isn't one of them. Jack and Diane did things that would make the most harcore Farker blush but they were hard to rhyme and never made it to the song. John Hughes' movies aside the 80's should be a warning not a source of nostalgia.

I always understood this (and the subsequent line, "across the north and south to Key Largo") to be expressing the extensiveness of the subject's itinerary, demonstrating the geographical breadth of his extensive love life. In other words, he traveled from somewhere on the east coast (perhaps Florida, ultimately completing a loop?) to the west coast (probably L.A.) to meet one lover, then flew from L.A. to Chicago to meet another, then made some more stops with additional lovers in the "across the north and south," and eventually ended up with a final lover (back home?) in Key Largo.
