For all of the naysaying about this one beforehand, I have to admit, from the teaser, this looks like it could be really cool

I'm holding out for the Jar Jar prequel

It didn't get me too optimistic.  I'll see it, but I'm not setting my expectations too high.

Lando casting was spot on, though.

Would make a lot more sense.  The story arc for Solo ends with him being a self-serving smuggler.  It's not until the original trilogy that he actually has a redemption arc.  By the time we see Lando in Empire, he has gone from being a smuggler to being a law-abiding citizen and manager of a mining facility.  His arc is something that would make a prequel movie.

I have been sufficiently entertained by the previous Disney Star Wars movies that I will see this, although probably at a matinee.

Lando may have done the occasional smuggling job, but he was more of a professional gambler.

Anyway, this teaser looks alright, but tells us absolutely nothing we didn't already know.

I thought the angle of Han starting out by trying to join the Empire was interesting, not sure if that was ever mentioned in any of the other movies, but it's not something I would've thought his character would've done.

This "angle" goes back to the 70s and was built out more fully in the 90s in Lucas sanctioned comics and books.   Based on the 60 seconds shown so far they are borrowing heavily from that.

I remember last year there was a lot of concern when word came that they had an acting coach on the set to work with the actor playing Han.  Did anyone ever consider this was someone who was hired to immerse himself in the OT, and was there to help the actor use inflections and mannerisms that would remind views of the Han we remember from those films?

There's a number of books about his life, but they may throw all of that out for the movie.

But it's been known that Han Solo was once in the Imperial Navy, an ace pilot, who saved the life of a Wookie slave and was court martialed for it and blacklisted as a pilot.

Also on the subject of the Imperial Navy Academy, Luke Skywalker wanted to attend, and his best friend Biggs Darklighter did attend, with the intention of getting the training, and defecting to the Rebellion.

why does Solo need a redemption arc in this movie?  Can't it just be a movie about him doing scounderly stuff?  Like Oceans Eleven?

Fortunately there are a bunch of books that satisfy the back story itch. I've borrowed a bunch of audio books from my local library to listen to in the car rather than the radio.

Really liked the Darth Plagis, and the Obi Wan before Luke stories. (The Obi Wan was him on Tatooine watching over Luke from afar, but gets into many other things before A New Hope begins)

That trailer looks siiiiiick. I'm glad there are still things going on in this world that we can look forward to.

2018-02-05 03:37:31 AM
The scenes looked ok, but they're like flashes that show nothing of how the actual movie will feel. There was never anything wrong with the production values, costuming or casting in the Dinsney starwars movies, that wasn't at all where anything fell down.

This feels like a well edited trailer, but not nearly enough to make me excited yet. Even Suicide Squad had an excellent trailer after all...

It was 30 seconds of scenery and effects, and I don't think it's a good sign that we don't see the lead actor do any acting. It's like a really slick ad for a burger chain that somehow manages not to show any food.

It was a teaser for the first of several trailers coming in the next few months.  Sometimes building anticipation before a big reveal is useful in marketing and story-telling.

I know. Isn't promotion for the coming advertising campaign fantastic?
Doesn't change that fact that if he is doing a good impression of a young Harrison Ford, this would be a damn good time show that.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Visually it's stunning - but that gets 0 points now. That is the baseline; with a Star Wars movie, you can only lose points for lacklustre imagery. The acting was non-existent here, even by trailer standards.

Still, cautious optimism. Mostly for dancing robots, gold plated women and that walking carpet, but still.

At what point are we going to get an out and out remake of A New Hope?  Not TFA, but a complete redo of Luke, Obi Wan, the works.  Put the originals in their own universe and make movies that will tie in better with Episodes 7, 8, and 9..  Flush the prequels altogether and make "Anakin:  A Star Wars Story" with the follow up "Vader" movie to replace them.

Unfortunately Star Wars imagery is so iconic that it's easy to make a cool looking trailer, no matter how bad the movie is.

Yup. They aren't going to throw down all their cards in Feb when the movie doesn't come out til May.  With any luck this will be better than the very uneven Ep 8.  Focusing on just one character and one story line should help.  I have a new hope that this will be a good one. (groan)

That was my thought when I saw that story. If he's really going to sell the character he's got to have enough of his mannerisms and speech patterns internalized that he can put on a convincing performance without it becoming a bad impersonation. That shiat's not easy.

Full trailer is out.

Seems like it's a Heist movie. Appears that Han and Chewie are already together too, which is a big disappointment. To me, the two are inextricably linked and not showing how they came together kind of defeats the purpose of an origin film. I hope I'm wrong and the heist aspect is just the climax.

If it's true an acting coach was brought on board to help him sound more Han-like, I'm disappointed. His speech patterns don't match, nor does the sound of his voice. The "It's fine" line at the end is an obvious throwback, but it just highlights far off he sounds.

Solo's true nature shows when he rescues Chewie. He's a smuggler and a rogue for a number of reasons... living on the streets in his youth, lazy attitude, but most importantly, because after being dishonorably discharged, smuggling and odd jobs are the only way he can make a living. There is plenty to see before he is hired at the Cantina by two local yokels to find a princess.

I'm going to disagree with you.  The Origin Story is a way overdone plot these days, more so than the Heist Movie.  Too often these days we have movies trying to shoehorn in too many plots and too many characters.  The last couple Star Wars movies were prime examples of that.  By its nature an origin story has to weave in a lot of backstory and exposition and then bring it forward to a present day conflict.  Better to focus on a single narrative especially given that Han Solo is already one of the best known characters here on planet earth.

If it's true an acting coach was brought on board to help him sound more Han-like, I'm disappointed. His speech patterns don't match, nor does the sound of his voice. The "It's fine" line at the end is an obvious throwback, but it just highlights far off he sounds.

I'm going to go with that line being a tribute, not a throwback.  I agree though that the worst thing they can do is try to recreate Harrison Ford.
