(NBC Sports)   NFL neatly sidesteps the kneeling for the National Anthem by performing "America, the Beautiful" before switching to PINK belting out one verse of the "Star Spangled Banner". No time to kneel. I thought athletes had quick reaction times   ( stream.nbcsports.com) divider line

Definitely true.

America the Beautiful is a far far FAR better song anyway, and would make a great national anthem if only they replaced the "God" word with "the Gods."

And at least Pink left out the 3rd verse of the Star Spangled Banner declaring victory over "the hireling and the slave."

Battle Hymn of the Republic is my pick for anthem, especially as it signifies kicking Confederacy ass, but the Religious Right would abuse the hell out of it.

This is the new anthem. Everyone else is Nunes levels of wrong and un-American.

The Ray Charles rendition should be required playing at all sporting events.

The outrage should be that this wasn't chosen as the alternative:

God Bless the USA - I'm Proud to be an American~ Lee Greenwood Lyrics

or it could be the outrage if enough people plant the seed in the right places.

Fun fact: while "The Star Spangled Banner" has four verses, our National Anthem officially only has the first two, so the part about "the hireling and slave" isn't part of the National Anthem.

Agreed. Even without the problematic third and almost-as-problematic fourth verses, "A Defence of Fort McHenry" (the poem that became the lyrics to "The Star Spangled Banner") remains about one battle in one particularly useless war in which the USA was quite frankly the baddies (slaves were fleeing to Canada, which was at the time still a British colony [Britain having already freed their own slaves, including in Canada], and we didn't like that so we went to war over it). The tune it was set to is "The Anacreontic Song" which was a British drinking club song that was deliberately designed to make as little musical sense as possible and be as hard to sing as possible, as it was intended as a drinking challenge. Despite all the military bands and vocal harmony groups and soloists over the years who've succeeded in making it sound decently inspirational, that was not its original intent. Its original lyrics are also a pæan to pagan Roman gods and goddesses.

"America the Beautiful" on the other hand is actually about America: its land, its people, its history, its wealth, and yes, its military heroes. Yes, it references a monotheistic God commonly called by that title in the chorus of every verse, and much more than even the fourth verse of "The Star Spangled Banner" (the only place in that poem that references God). Musically it's vastly superior in every respect.

And, it was written before the Act of Congress that in the 1930s declared the first two verses of "The Star Spangled Banner" as our official National Anthem, so they could've gone with that instead. Though, mainly, they were simply codifying into actual law the earlier Executive Order that declared by Presidential fiat that those first two verses of "The Star Spangled Banner" were our Anthem, and that EO does predate the writing and publication of "America the Beautiful."
