We saw Shape of Water last week, and we give it an 8 out of 10.  It's beautifully shot and a very unique take on the classic story.

Sally Hawkins and Richard Jenkins are fantastic, but it's Octavia Spenser who makes it for me.

Wow, the crappy movie season of January is spilling into February. I looked at the upcoming releases and it looks dire.

I saw Hostiles.  I'd give it 5/10.

/Not as good as the original, Hostel.

Now that Last Jedi is no longer in the top ten, where the hell is the trailer for Solo?

Yuuuuup. Lots of "I'll catch that on streaming/sale disc" films. Not much that makes me want to put my cheeks in the ultra-lounger at the theater. And I'm a cinephile. :-/

Same here. I love going to the movies. Maybe Winchester might be a Red Box rental but that's it.

That's pretty much my plan :)

Seriously, here in the bay area we could use some second-run/dollar theaters. I'd take a gamble on a lot more "edge case" offerings for sure. When I was trapped in Ohio, I saw an astonishing number of films in those theatres. Now I'm down to a handful a year.

/yeah, I know about Moviepass, but the monthly cost for everyone in my family doesn't justify it.

Saw I, Tonya last night. Not too bad at all. A bit too sympathetic to Harding, but certainly implicated her in being complicit in something while trying to dodge all responsibility.

[Minor spoiler]

My only real beef is that for the first hour and a half, the movie invites you along to see Harding's bad behavior, invites you to laugh at it (it's often presented comically), and then blames you, you the viewer, for being one of her abusers. Seemed bait and switchy.

I saw I, Tonya for the second time Friday. It's great, and I think Margo Robbie deserves to win that Oscar.

I saw Call Me by Your Name on Saturday. It's beautifully shot and has a great soundtrack. The movie is OK.

I plan to see Phantom Thread tonight.

I'll be surprised if we don't see something during the Super Bowl tonight.

Also hoping for a Cloverfield Station trailer and release date.

Recently, I've seen Shape of the Water, I, Tonya, The Post, and Hostiles.

All are excellent films (though Hostiles is extremely bleak).

Jumanji was a decent popcorn flick.

I'll tell you this, our MoviePasses have more than paid for themselves. It's such a great deal... till they go bankrupt because their business model is crazy. Until then, though, I'll see you at the movies.

Moviepass
$9.95 / month gets you one movie ticket per day
No night/weekend or any other weird blackout times
Not for 3D or other fancy seatings but I'm not complaining

Black Panther is going to make an absolute mint in a week and a half. Once that hits there's a pretty decent stream of movies (spaced out, thankfully) from then on out.

My wife has MoviePass, and that works out great for me. I don't love the movie theater experience, but she does. Now she can go every day and not be grumpy that I don't join her.

If it's off peak, they're fine with $10/month (I live in the UK and there's a £15/month deal, but it's more liberal with times).

It's a sustainable model. If a theater can make $0.25 on a seat, it's better than $0 on a seat. Unless you're taking up a seat someone will pay $10 for, they're good. Plus, you might buy expensive drinks and snacks.

I know a couple who both have unlimited cards in the UK and don't rent movies. They live walking distance from a theater and just walk around and see the films.

That's why some idiot they're quoting compared it to Goodfellas. Yeah Goodfellas was also about a terrible person who for the most part got away with it but even though you felt no "sympathy" for those guys, you liked them in a sadistic way. I have no interest in Harding then and don't now.

But if Margot Robbie can manage to play someone who was largely not all that attractive and very unlikable, maybe she does deserve an award.

Maybe a surprise Superb Owl commercial today. (so says the scuttlebutt)

Definitely a premiere on Good Morning America on ABC (a Disney network, 'natch) tomorrow morning.

Soon to be seen everywhere on-line tomorrow after 10:00 am.

I'm not their target demo but these movies based on teen novels look farking annoying.

Although, this morning in a hungover state I did watch the last half of The Hunger Games and its sequel and they weren't the worst movies I ever saw. Sort of The Running Man with kids. I'm still not watching Twilight or the Maize Runner (in our land we call it "corn") though.

I'm surprised Jeremy Renner didn't get a nomination for Wind River. Of course, that movie still had some residual stink from Weinstein.

It does.  And I NEVER watch movies like this (PG-13 jump scares).
But I actually took the Winchester Mystery House tour last summer.  It was cheesy, goofy fun!
So now I'm curious to see the movie.

I won't go to the theater, but I will Red Box it
