By the time this comes out Windows 7 will be over nine years old. If you're still using Windows 7 you can either upgrade, use an older version, or get a subscription version.

I don't see anyone getting forced to use Windows 10 here.

2018-02-03 05:20:10 PM
This is the one-off purchase package. I'm still using Office 2007. How many people will want the very latest version of Office but also choose to stick with a years old OS?

They're not as bad as Apple who took away Siri from all the users who had it and told them they had to buy the new iPhone to get Siri back. If MS kill existing Office package for everyone still on W7 and tell them they have to upgrade to 10 to get it back then you can get outraged.

2018-02-03 05:21:10 PM
Windows 7 will be going out of support 1/2020. If they had to support Office 2019 for its lifespan they would effectively have to support Win 7 as well.

Jesus.  Just upgrade already. It isn't that bad.

If you think that's getting me to ditch MS-DOS 4.01, you're out of your mind. I'll just use WordPerfect.

2018-02-03 06:13:49 PM
I still have Office 2002 on CD that I got with my Dell 15 years ago, and so far it's compatible with all subsequent versions, and Office 2011 that I have on my MacBook. I've sent résumés and all sorts of documents in Word format for countless reasons and nobody's ever said, "You need to copy and paste this into a newer version of Word."

I'll be pissed the second they do. Until then -- meh.

2018-02-03 07:01:57 PM
This won't affect Office for Mac, which is a separate product with a different release schedule.

Damn you, submitter. I was worried.
I just with NeoOffice, OpenOffice and LibreOffice worked better with the new MS file formats. Also, the new 365 crap breaks mail.app's exchange connector unless I upgrade to Sierra Mist or whatever they call it. Ugh.

We need more competition in the markets to make software better. If I want software that I will be using for probably the life of the computer, I don't see why I should be only able to rent it- and if I want to buy it, I need a small loan to cover it.

Oh man. I've worked in offices where people could not learn new things. A new OS and a new version of office? It will be a nightmare for any office where the computer literate have to teach the computer illiterate.

Companies don't train like they used to. You have to train yourself or hope someone near you knows what's up.

There hasn't been a reason to upgrade office since probably Office 2003.  Other than maybe Outlook.

Not really.  I am pretty sure MS will be putting out other software that will technically work on Windows 7 long after 2020.  They just won't support the OS.  And they most likely won't support that software running on the OS.

I have Windows 10, and I have legacy MS programs from 1997 running on it because I have to support legacy software which no one wants to pay to upgrade because it just works.

I know with both my comments I'm starting to sound old.  But lots of industries don't spend money upgrading that which works fine for what it is intended to do.

My wife is like that. Our WinXP laptop finally died. She thus jumped straight to Windows 10. And she MUST use Outlook for E-mail. Thank goodness I could get her old .PST file off the old hard drive.

Who are these unwilling users and how old is the operating system they're using?

You can throw out anybody using Apple or Linux or whatever else. We're specifically talking about Microsoft users.

10 years ago, if you were using a three-year-old operating system it wasn't as big a deficiency as it is now. Things are changing faster than ever.

Windows 7? Jesus, I bought that retarded shiat for my girlfriend like 7 years ago and even then I wasn't all that impressed.

Microsoft's long term strategy is 'Window Store apps or nothing'.   The Store does not run in Windows 7, QED... The current Office evagelists and OEM policies are forcing the 'Universal' version that runs on Windows 10 S into everything.   The 365 team has a back seat in that train.

/Don't expect whatever OS MS releases mainstream in the fall of 2020 to install ordinary win32 apps without hackery
//OTOH the Universal API should actually be capable by that time
///Unless MS abandons development of UWP like they did to .NET, WPF, and WinRT

I'll add the whole major update resetting the crapware settings. No, I didn't want Candy Crush before and I certainly don't want it after the fall creators update.

It is funny, though, seeing their own DOM for Edge causing a funny bug. A forced forced a splash screen that asks you to enter your mobile number to install Edge in Microsoft's further push to get people to use Edge as their browser doesn't work with Edge's DOM so it launches IE. Basically, in trying to strong arm people to using Edge it launches their legacy Internet Explorer.

Windows 10 is great for running on old, low power, machines. I have installed W8 and then 10 on to a Compaq netbook that shipped with XP. Atom CPU, 1gb RAM. Runs perfectly.

And if you use Windows 10 on a tablet or touch device here is how to easily enable the hidden touch friendly file explorer app.  All you have to do is create a shortcut.

Come on MS! Make this public!

/File Explorer in tablet mode spaces out the files and makes selecting easier, but this is way cooler and easier to select multiple files.

And? If what I have does what I want, then that is what I use. People who just have to have something that they don't need just because are some of the most insecure people imaginable.
"Better" is only better if it does more of what you want, or does it faster. Then again all that depends on what you want, and what you want isn't what everyone else wants.

Keep that in mind.
