they created a second entangled pair C and D, with C depending on the value of B.which had already been established when A was measured, to particle C. Which, since C is entangled with particle D, establishes the state of D.

How particle C is supposed to have picked up the state of particle B without C measuring B is unclear.

Thanks for asking that question. It made me go back and re-read the explanation. Here's how I understand it:

Photons 1&2 are entangled. You measure 1, so you know 2 will have the same polarity.

2 goes on a detour while you create entangled photons 3&4.

You measure 3 and 2 so that 2's state replaces 3's original state.

1 and 3 now have the same polarization, because 1&2 were entangled, and 2 has "swapped" its state with 3's state.

2's polarization is now entangled with 4's, and 4's with 1's.

The polarization of 1 gets passed to 4.

The thing is, you don't do the measurement till after all this has happened. You can now know the state of 1 by measuring 4, even though 1 and 4 didn't exist at the same time.
