Young Shatner would be awesome!

I love Chris Pine's Kirk, it's better than Shatner. But to see the Shat back - oh yeah, baby!

They did well with Kurt Russell in Guardians two.

But they would need to story-wise work around the cast members that have passed away.  Tricky.

Could he have a 'time slip' and team up with Data?  He needs a logician to interplay with after all.
Q setting up an og Marvel Secret Wars scenario, that draws characters from all the shows up through Voyager, could be an attractive prospect.

Captain Kirk downloaded a LOT of genetic material to a variety of spacebabes all over the galaxy, so bringing him back from the dead really shouldn't be a problem. The question more paramount...will it be evil Kirk.

Being dead / coming back to life in science fiction is really not an issue.

Also Kirk has died before and comeback to life.

William Shatner sucks. Why doesn't he ask for a CGI crew to undead the chick that drowned in his pool?

EXACTLY. They said they COULD do it with virtual reality tech, nowhere in that article does it say they WILL do it.

I've been rewatching TOS lately and finding myself pleasantly reminded that Shatner was actually a great actor in the first two seasons, leaps and bounds above many of the other performers in the show (aside from Nimoy and Kelley, of course). You can still see the hammy tendencies that he succumbed to, but he does a really great job in the earlier episodes once he fully grasps the character. (Too bad he was so-so in most of the films and terrible in Generations. Nimoy, meanwhile, was always great in anything he was asked to do.)

The reviewing has also reminded me that most of the TOS cliches come from the latter half of the 2nd season and 3rd season, when the show got less creative and more repetitive.

You can't be put Shatner in the reboots, they've already got a Kirk. Maybe Tarantino would have a use for him. Otherwise you save CGI Kirk for the end of Discovery, assuming they reset their universe at the end of that series.

Agreed. Speculation that he'll be in the movie is just Shatner offering to be in the movie. There are not plans. Also, who the fark knows what Shatner based that on. Ziva Dynamics has some nice technology but, as far as I know, hasn't shown anything that realistically models a human. Their stuff looks great for animals but a believable human is another thing as we've just seen with Princess Leia and Tarkin.

What. A. Shiat. Article.

This is Shatner desperately trying to insert himself in a movie. The movie's director has shown no interest in it. Therefore it won't happen.

Even more laughable is Shatner thinking that a virtual reality company's cheesy products are equivalent to the incredible and time-consuming work that went into de-aging Kurt Russel. Not even close to the same thing.

If they're going to do an animated Trek I wish someone would try to find the audio dialog that the entire original cast recorded together for The Secret of Vulcan Fury.

That thing was written by original Trek writer D.C. Fontana.  I'm still angry this became vaporware.

Why can't they just run him though the transporter using a pattern from 1967?
Certainly Star Fleet keeps back ups on the Magellanic cloud, right?

Bring him back on a episode of the Orville as a holodeck simulation of one of the Star Trek fans on the crew.  Because Star Trek was actually a television show in the Orville universe.

It doesn't stand up to HD quality on a 54 inch screen.  I've been watching TOS the past few months over the air and things like conventional tv makeup is pretty obvious.  But TOS was made at a time when many people had B/W tvs and if they had a color tv it wasn't the size of a toddler bed.

2018-02-03 03:36:21 PM
I can easily imagine a Trek show where Shatner voices and mocaps a virtual Kirk, based on the Emergency Medical Hologram technology from ST Voyager.  You could rationalize that Starfleet orders up the simulation as a training aid for captains in training.  With the understanding that you can't use him to practice for the Kobayashi Maru Test.

If you remember the first season of "Seaquest DSV", Captain Bridger had an AI hologram "mentor" in his cabin he could bounce ideas off of.  This would be similar.  Young captain Smith faces some dilemma and calls up the Emergency Kirk to ask what He'd do.  Then the live captain could choose to use or not use that opinion in their decision-making.

Any Pie Left: I can easily imagine a Trek show where Shatner voices and mocaps a virtual Kirk

I'm just guessing but I assume the whole procedure costs a lot in time and resources, maybe more than a TV show's budget could handle for more than a cameo.

It was just as bad a decade after it aired. I mean, I'm a guy who thinks the enhanced version of TOS is for suckers and idiots. But I'll be the first to admit that a lot of it lame then and comes off lamer now. But if you need updated FX to enjoy it...yeah.

I had TOS on VHS tapes that I bought from Columbia House back when that was a thing.  The old sfx didn't really bother me (1990s).
