Well, sure, football season would conflict with drama club and show choir.

/was a band/drama/choir geek myself in HS, so no shade intended

From the comments, it seems people still don't realize Superb Owl halftime performers aren't paid a damn thing.

I played football in high school in the late 80s and loved it, but there's no WAY I'd let my kid play. Too farking dangerous.

Today is the first time I'd heard of this.  But I don't really care about the Super Bowl.

He will play that puss kickball football instead.

And no score will be kept.

I agree.  CTE is, from the looks of things, *inevitable* if you 'play hard' and don't stop after your first concussion -- and a lot of kids have apparently had their 'first' concussion by sometime in 9th grade.

Did he say it as a father protecting his son - or a father saying 'This kid couldn't catch a frickin' cold in a crowded ER never mind a g'damn ball!'?

/didn't RTFA

The kid's only 2.

No, but they do get to promote their new album and the NFL pays for the cost of putting on the show.  The league is spending around $10 mil so that JT can promote himself.  Seems a fair deal.

/CSB time

My son's friend is a freshman and has played football/rugby since 6th grade. He has had 5 diagnosed concussions from playing these sports. The last one had him wearing sun glasses for 3 weeks because of light sensitivity. He loves football and rugby and his doctor has said that even though he passes his baseline tests, the last 2 have caused some issues with short term memory. His parents have said that concussions are part of life so he will be fine.
I however with my son have said if he wants to play football that's fine. He's in 6th grade but loves basketball, swimming, & soccer.  He's said his football playing will probably be Madden based which is fine  by me.

Yeah, I think the kid's probably not gonna be the athletic type once he sees the trust fund Daddy sets up for him.

Not with those 40 times he won't.

Much like climate change, the science is in on CTE, right? I love football, but you can't tell me that playing it isn't bad for your brain. Work on a solution instead of attacking the messengers.

Head injuries are bad, dude.  Even non-concussive injuries are bad for long term brain health. If I have kids, I will probably sideline them from anything that has a high probability of head injuries, lest they grow up and murder Nicole Simpson.

You can't buy that kind of exposure, and his new album dropped today.

Relax, he didn't mean football. He meant his son will never do that kicky, flop flop foreign shiat.

2018-02-02 02:52:18 PM
If he's built like his father, the kid will be too small to play football except as a kicker.

There are plenty of sports besides armored hand-egg.
Real football
Rugby
Basketball
All sorts of stuff involving running, throwing, catching, lifting heavy things.

He could even try the toughest sport of all: ballet.

The kid will have DNA for singing and acting.  Nothing about Timberlake's build/body type says my kids will be able to be a great football player.  Sure all kids can play pee wee to some extent, but even Hs football (at least here in FL) is not for the skinny white kid.

His father is stinking rich, of course he will never play football.  Hell, he doesn't have to do anything!

2018-02-02 04:30:58 PM
the only solutions to the concussion problem fall entirely in the realm of science fiction:

have the players play in Power Armor

replace the players with robots

redesign the brain to be more shock adsorbent (remake the neuroglia to stiffen upon impact, thus preventing deformation of the brain)

replace the player's brain with a cybernetic one

develop the ability the repair brain damage on a precise cellular level, but then you just discovered biological immortality and the cure for Alzheimer's and cancer, so who cares about football?

Or you could just not tackle as hard

part of fixing football to be safer would have to fundamentally change the game.

but it's not like the game hasn't changed before

people used to die too much, so the started the heresy of the "Forward pass"

The game needs to become more finesse based.

Shrinking the roster could help.  If instead of 55 people, you're only allowed 35, then you can't have dedicated o-line, d-line, etc.  You can't have 350+lb people because they will never have the stamina.

Go back to leather helmets perhaps?  they're just frickin' weapons now.  Probably won't lead with your head either.

These are some thoughts I had.  And to those who say "that's not football" or whatever, neither was the forward pass.

Its a much more certain route to gainful employment if you are a male minority in this country, far longer career and a path to a career after your performing days are over.    How many kids in youth sports go on to any sort of pro gig?   1 in 10 or 20 thousand?    Male dancers who can fog a mirror are employed, always, and scholarships are a given.    But hey, wouldn't want to be seen in public wearing tights right?

And only a complete idiot would fark with a professional dancer. They exercise all goddamned day.

The early arthritis would suck, however.

Not just the brain. Injuries and generally being slammed about catch up to you big time in middle age.

In my opinion, Tom Brady is an idiot. The man's 40 for Christ's sake. I seriously doubt his body and brain will be having much fun in 10 - 15 years.

It doesn't solve the problem though, studies are showing that rugby will screw people up too.

Neither should be illegal or anything, but neither should be paid for with tax dollars.... Local high schools should not have football teams.  Not sure if children should be allowed to play.
