Them getting back together for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction was miraculous in and of itself. Enjoy what they were, don't go looking for some nostalgia trip.
Besides, Byrne has put out some amazing stuff on his own, and Jerry Harrison did some decent, if forgettable, stuff. Avoid Tom Tom Club, I say.

I want to first explain that there is no other band I have ever listened to more than The Talking Heads. They are probably my very favorite band. They are the only group I can think of where I consider every single one of their album songs to be, at very least, good. I used to play bass in a Talking Heads cover band. I even used to dance while playing, the goofy way Tina does. You would be hard pressed to find someone who loves them better than I...

Dear Talking Heads,
Please don't do a reunion tour.

I think it's hard for many artists to recognize that what they achieved as part of a group will always outshine what they achieve on their own. Same applies to The Smiths, Beatles, Oasis, The Eagles, etc. It's not always the case, Iggy Pop, Beyonce, Rod Stewart, etc. who are all better known for their solo work, but it seems that the brighter a band shines, the dimmer the solo careers of it's members seem in comparison.

Oddly, Byrne is the least essential Head for me. I'd go see the big Stop Making Sense band sans Byrne in a second.

I was listening to them last night in the car, Once In A Lifetime came on, my 11 year old turned it up and sang along. She made me happy.

He's coming to the Jazz Fest, here in NOLA, so I might go check him out. Not a huge fan but True Stories is my 2nd favorite movie of all time.
Of course, I live across the street from the Fairgrounds, so I could just sit on my porch with some wine and listen to the show and save 70 bucks.

Tom Tom Club is supposedly one of the prime movers in the demise of TH.....Byrne went off to make a Serious Artistic Statement Albumtm with Eno ("my life in the bush of ghosts"), TTC makes their record, which blows the fark up.  Byrne's album was politely received but basically overshadowed by TTC.  supposedly, this reaally chapped Byrne's ego and was a sticking point in later years; he was supposedly jealous/hurt that the folks he regarded as artistic  lightweights outdid him.

Csb

The first time I heard the album by that name I had to ask a bartender which album it was. What followed was five minutes of abbot and Costello madness that had to make him think I was a total idiot.

"Yes, dude, I know talking Heads. I'm asking which album this is."

In the endless debate over "Best live album of all time" I place Stop Making Sense at #1, just above Peter Frampton Comes Alive.   I've got it on cassette tape, listened to it across the country (Seattle to VA Beach) both ways.  I've got it on digital.  I've got it on vinyl (original pressing! woo!).  The album sleeve notes are worth the read all by themselves.

Talking Heads is one of those bands that is better live than in studio.

I recently read How Music Works so I'm completely unsurprised by this. Byrne is a working artist and musician. From that book to his internationally exhibited installation piece, Playing the Building, to his work with St. Vincent to his new documentary to his continued touring, he seems pretty busy.

And the Heads material will be about 1/3 as good as it would've been if the Heads had performed it.

Here's the deal (and I'm looking squarely at YOU David Byrne): as talented as you are, it's never been all about you. You've never been able to equal the creative highs on your own as you did when the Heads were a REAL BAND, not just your backing band, as on the everything from Little Creatures through Naked. A fully functioning Talking Heads was more than the sum of the parts, and though you were maybe (arguably) the most important part, you continually underestimated (and still do) what every other member brought to the mix. And because you got distracted by success, band never reached it's full creative potential.

So no, real Talking Heads fans don't want a "nostalgia exercise". We want new material that could possibly bring everything the band represented forward into this era. And if you would tour that material that would be awesome. However, most of us are smart enough not to expect it by now.

Remember the closing ceremony of the Olympics heralding the next one in London with Jimmy Page suddenly appearing (and not being able to keep up with the taped riffs of Whole Lotta Love)? Broke my heart.

not just your backing band, as on the everything from Little Creatures through Naked

I remember every one of those records being a crushing disappointment as well. I never listen to anything after Name of This Band anymore. Much like WB REM, I just pretend those albums don't exist.

Hey now, I definitely have a fear of music played only for a nostalgia cash grab. It certainly does not look like this is a tentative decision on his part. On paper, it probably looks like they can make a bunch of money, but at that age, it's probably hard to stay up late traveling to all those cities. I'm sure he has found a job that makes him happy, day and night.

I despise naked avarice but unfortunately, it's not a perfect world. The good thing is, people like us can always enjoy those old songs and good memories. Can't wait to see his new stuff live.

I'm just glad to have seen Steely Dan before Becker passed. I was disappointed they didn't play any of Fagen's solo stuff; The Nightfly was an amazing album.

I saw him in '09 and had similar concern, but he definitely works in lots of TH material. Hell of a show. Despite what others are saying re: the importance of the rest of the band, seeing Byrne is as close as it gets to experiencing Talking Heads live.

Oh, now you are just being sour.  Byrne was critical to that band.  I agree with him that it's a nostalgia exercize, though potentially one that would be a huge windfall to the other heads if they need it.  I truly don't know.

I think someone else could absolutely sing the material, replacing Bryne as the frontman would be the issue, but you could get someone like Jon King for example.

If I could pick a place to see anyone, it would be at Red Rocks. It is worth a gamble to go see Byrne. I regret not seeing Big Head Todd there, although I probably saw them 20 times for free.

I did see Midnight Oil at Red Rocks though. Fantastic show.

Byrne at Jazz Fest would be pretty good. Girl I took to prom's Uncle ran the beer concession there. We went to the 89 Jazz Fest for free and got free beer.

I haven't been back to NO in about 25 years. I still haven't received any invites to any of my class reunions.
