I am amazed this did not happen a decade ago. They made a Gem and the Holograms movie and Mario was out there, just being all recognizable and relevant? It's almost like the entertainment industry is populated by short memoried morons.

Eh, outside of Minions/Despicable Me what have they done well? I just caught Sing on Netflix the other day and it was mediocre, as was Secret Life of Pets.

Especially when compared to Zootopia.

Secret Life of Pets was kind of fun. Little kids seem obsessed with Sing (although I am not sure that was the goal there). Everything depends on the story. I am not inherently interested in Mario, but they may be able to come up with a narrative that is interesting.

I mean, I'm as excited as I could possibly be for a movie aimed at children. I also collect Shopkins and Hatchimals.

Alright, am I gonna be the one who says it? The Mario Bros. movie isn't that bad, and while it never fully comes together, there are individual pieces of the film that are actually pretty great (even if the whole... isn't).

Is it a faithful adaptation? No. Could you actually do a faithful adaptation? No! Well, maybe today, with the way the game world has expanded, but in 1993, Mario was entirely about jumping on weird mushroom dudes and turtles. Was using Mojo Nixon as Toad a stupid idea? Yes! (And I say that as a huge fan of Prairie Home Invasion which... boy... that hasn't aged well as an album title, has it?)

I dare give it credit for being a dark and gritty reboot long before it was popular.

It'll be interesting to see if they can make something really good out of it. Decent video game movies are few and far between. Yes, Uwe Boll is responsible for a lot of the turd piles, but even if you don't count his movies the ratio is still bad.

Illumination is definitely inferior to Disney\Pixar and DreamWorks. I'd be more optimistic if one of those 2 companies were involved.

Stop there.

Why did Mortal Kombat work where Street Fighter did not?

Mortal Kombat was a film that was consistent with the storyline and look of the game.

This text is now purple: Mortal Kombat was a film that was consistent with the storyline and look of the game

That isn't why at all. Mortal Kombat worked because it lifted its plot from Enter the Dragon. I mean, the game largely did too, but then again, so did Street Fighter (the game). Neither of them did it as well as Enter the Dragon, sooooo...

here's the real question: can they fark it up as bad or worse than  the original super mario brothers movie?

Sure, it's by the team that brought you The Minions, but it will be a live action reboot, with Chris Pratt as the titular Mario, Matthew McConaughey as Luigi, Charlize Theron as Princess Peach, and Gary Oldman as King Koopa. In this era of #MeToo and racist tensions, it will be far more politically correct film, too... Princess Peach won't be helpless and forget the stereotypical thick "Italian" accents by the heroes. Mario-eating plants will be explained as the result of global climate change.

Miyamoto finally caught the film bug after directing the Pikmin shorts, and he'll be producing this. Pretty sure they'll keep a strong hand on it after pointedly not doing so with the first. Also, Martinet is an accomplished VA outside of Mario's short outbursts, so there should be no reason not to use him. Anyone who isn't Mario/Luigi/Wario/Walugi has no set VA so they can be the star-power draw if needed.

Shigeru Miyamoto's producing.

They haven't announced a voice yet, but there's no indication yet they plan to be disloyal to Charles Martinet.
