Maybe it's time to reconsider the policy of not hiring police officers with a high IQ because they might get bored. All they had to do was get a second opinion from another physician.

FTA:  "In 2004, the Meridian Township Police Department was investigating Nassar after 17-year-old Brianne Randall-Gay said he'd massaged her breasts and tried to stick his fingers into her vagina during a visit about scoliosis. The officers, however, decided not to pass the case on to prosecutors after Nassar showed them a PowerPoint that explained these actions were necessary for medical treatment."

I just can't imagine why more women don't report sexual assaults...

/now where's that Farker who says "rape kits aren't tested because women lose interest in pursuing their criminal complaints"...

Cool so these particular police officers are also 100% culpable for every time he abused someone after that date. Hope they see prison time as well, maybe they can share a cell with him!

This was possible because nobody takes girls seriously. Nobody believes what girls tell them, they want to believe that it's always something else, "you just  didn't understand", "you have body image issues", "this is just your low self esteem/hormones/whatever clouding your judgement". The least they could have done is consult with a different doctor, but everybody hates girls, so why bother

Terrible policework from top to um...er... bottom.

First, why are they asking him questions instead of arresting him?  Is that normal procedure in accusations of sexual assault on minors?  I'd think that they would talk first and only with the accuser/victim, and if there is probable cause based on her side of the story, they'd arrest him and let him defend himself with power points and expert testimony at trial.  If she said Jimmy at yoga class slipped it in while "helping" her, I bet the police would be asking Jimmy questions from behind bars.

Second, they're investigators - why were they taking his word for it and not......INVESTIGATING?  If you took his BS.ppt to a selection of other doctors or physical therapists and asked them their opinion on it, I bet you'd get some opposing views that would put his story in jeopardy.

I saw this story on another news site that said he used "official" sounding terms like peritoneum when descending the procedure.  I guess the moral of this story is if you use terms with more than 1 syllable, you'll get the police to drop their investigation.

Sorry, no...police are under no legal obligation to actually protect the public, per various court decisions.

Speaking to suspects is kind of a big part of police work.  It's a big part of police work even when the suspect is accused of molesting somebody.  In virtually every single police investigation the suspect is at least offered the chance to talk.  Taking only one side of the story from the complaining person and making an arrest is a pretty good way to not be a cop for long after the first or second time a person you've arrested shows you the alibi that he would have shown you had you bothered to get his side of the story.  Many times a lawyer refuses to allow their client to talk and instead will present affidavits or evidence to the police for the suspect.

As for the powerpoints, again, it's part of it.  I've had people hand me large packets of evidence allegedly proving they didn't do what the complaining person said they did.  They have as much right to have that evidence viewed and evaluated before charging decisions are made as the complaining person has to have their evidence viewed and evaluated.

As to these specific types of cases, a complaint of a crime is not sufficient to convict.  Actual physical evidence must be found to corroborate an allegation, or a confession obtained from the suspect.  Terrible as it is, digitally penetrating somebody does not leave evidence the way a rape, or some similar sexual assault would.

I read during the last phase of the trial that part of the difficulty was that some of the molestations took place during, and under the guise of, legitimate medical treatments.  That is he was treating these young women with legitimate treatments, and taking that opportunity to do something criminal during the course of it.

Proverbial balls were dropped all over the place for decades with this sexual monster.  Those balls do not include the police interrogating the accused and looking at evidence the accused wants them to see.  Those are literally pillars of our criminal justice system.  In fact, a great way to get a case thrown out in court is that the police did not afford a person the right to present exculpatory evidence in their favor.

HideAndGoFarkYourself: That is he was treating these young women with legitimate treatments, and taking that opportunity to do something criminal during the course of it.

The problem is, they weren't legitimate treatments for people without specific types of complaints or problems nor should they ever have been legitimately performed by this specific doctor, alone, with children. Any actual investigation would have proved this guy was about as legitimate as Dr. Nick.

HGH has legitimate uses as well, but we don't allow otherwise healthy baseball or football players to use it simply to get huge.

I remember back in Junior High some girls complaining that they had not been notified in advance of scoliosis exams, which would have allowed them to wear the right sort of top that could be left on during the exam.  That was back when the school could just read off names over the PA system and march kids down to the nurse's office for exams or vaccinations or whatever.
