There are leftist churches, though. Modest buildings full of kind, gentle people, who use the money provided by tithing to help others and honor the teachings of their belief system - y'know, the ones about not lying, loving thy neighbors as thy selves, rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, that sort of thing.

Problem is, we hear so rarely from them because they're not politically active, they're broke, and they're too busy helping others to spew vitriol and hate at a microphone for personal gain.

Mostly, we get the kind of churches full of folks who would listen to Alex Jones and follow his directions. Their buildings are often called "megachurches," and they only care about themselves to the point that they preach that they're rich and well-off because God loves them. They ignore the poor, denigrate anyone that they feel doesn't do their belief system benefit, and work in politics to further themselves at the expense of everyone else. They're the ones at the mic, most of the time.

To be fair, pastors have their biases. Many are right-wing uber-conservatives, like Billy Graham. There are those who are indeed on the left side of the political spectrum, like Jeremiah Wright. If ya believe in god, ya got a crazy mindset.

I guess it would befit me to click the link before commenting. Alex Jones is a nut so I shoulda expected that the story was a bit more elaborate than what the headline portrayed. In other words, welcome to Fark.

How are we leftists? We run things by democracy, extoll the virtues of education, and think the way to heaven is to bring a covered dish.

Wait, I think that makes us communists now...

Alex Jones is an abomination. For his followers, there are too few words.
I guess that makes sense.
If you read the NT it is hard not to conclude the Jesus was a "leftist".
He was also a rabble-rouser
If you want to get into it then he he could be a counter-revolutionary. .

I mean, Mainline Protestant, but yeah.

Lots of Catholics are pretty lefty too. Strong affiliations with communism, actually, throughout the world. Liberation Theology, I believe it was called back in the day. People tried to use it to hurt Tim Kaine politically, as I recall in '16.

I suspect jesus would be appalled by those that speak in his name in the modern age, or any age really. The crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, witch burnings , wars, murders , all done in his name by those claiming to follow his teachings.

There's a longstanding leftist tradition among American Catholic laity and some clergy, but the hierarchy has tended to lean more to the right.

I hope his followers to try to "infiltrate" liberal churches by attending their services. They might then actually learn what it is to be a good person.

PCUSA is a pretty good example of a mainline progressive denomination. They have a strong tradition of working for social justice, charity and racial and gender equality.

They're also one of the few mainstream Christian denominations to recognize and perform same sex marriages and ordain gay clergy.

Listen up Americans. I mean...no...listen up, Christians. I'm gonna tell you something important. Something so important that it will change your life. It will change your life so fundamentally, so categorically, that you will weep before...well, let's just say that you'll want to stay tuned...because this is really gonna change everything you thought about all of it. And I mean, for the better. It's gonna change you for the better.

Now, you know that there's someone smiling upon you, right? Smiling right proud, onto you and yours. For all eternity. You know this, right? Well, it can be even better if you really want it. I mean, if you really want it with your entire blessed soul and all it takes is just a small...a small little action. You won't even notice it if you do it quickly. What you need to do, and need to do right now, is pledge your love. You know what I mean. Pledge your love. Do it now, I implore you. He implores you. Pledge it with all your heart.
You'll feel so good, helping this mission on Earth. Helping those...helping those, like me, to help even more of the unfortunate ones. You know them. Those who are struggling to survive...to survive in a world where darkness reigns in inhospitable places...and there are not enough Lear jets to bring the light to them. Help me bring the light. Please. You know you want to help these poor souls. So I humbly ask for your generous, generous pledge. Do it now. You know what happens if you don't.

According to my dictionary, stochastic means unpredictable, due to the influence of one or more random variables.  How does it apply to terrorism, and how does it apply to Alex Jones?

Try looking up the terms together.

stochastic terrorism
[stuh-kas-tik ter-uh-riz-uh m]
Spell Syllables
Word Origin
noun
1.
the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted:

The lone-wolf attack was apparently influenced by the rhetoric of stochastic terrorism.

The UU church I occasionally attend is about one step above Quakers when it comes to pacifism.  They basically teach love and acceptance.  People looking for leftist radicals would probably fall asleep during the sermon.  It is really low key compared to the local non-denominational megachurches.

Yeah. Just like they attend Sihk temples and abortion clinics with guns and bombs. It's ironical how some free speech isn't seen as terrorism because vieled threats technically are not threats. Just giant dog whistles.

I will be very happy if nothing bad becomes of this assclown's show. Pizzaghazi!

Yeah, so what?
O'Reilly got people killed, and nobody did anything about him till he was caught with his dick out.
What makes you think anyone is going to do anything about this asshole when he gets people killed (if you accept that he hasn't already, that is).
And I blame the people who put him on the air for money. He is insane, and the muppets who listen to him are literally crippled with stupidity - but somewhere, a sane, sober guy in a suit, in an office, made the decision to put Jones on the air - for the love of money.
That person(s) is who really bears the moral burden for whatever ghastly ending Jone's story comes to.

Intended on pointing this out as well. Of all the famous preachers/ministers/evangelists I know of, he's the only one who walks the walk. Sure he's built an empire in the process, but it's a working empire not an entirely selfish one.

I thought it became clear a while ago that Alex Jones was a snake oil salesman.  He also has said outright that he doesn't believe that crap that he says.  It's all a "character".

Somehow after he himself said this, his followers are still there.

Whatever...  I do not consider him to be any sort of relevant at all any more.  He is a useless blowhard asshole.

My dad is convinced there was a right-wing conspiracy to infiltrate progressive churches and push them right, both theologically and politically.  I think there was a book that supported this conclusion, although I can't remember enough about it to find it online.

It does appear a lot of conservatives and fundamentalist Christians feel very threatened by leftist and progressive Christian theology.

Its already a cause for concern.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/police-investigating-racist-signs-hung-church-article-1.3772081

Last month the Unitarian church in my neighborhood had signs placed on the property saying stuff like God hats[sic] n***ers and gays; Burn the church down Jan 23; etc, etc, etc.  One sign took issue with Jackson Brown. The police here canvased the neighborhood but we saw no one. Many of us sat up late on the 23rd watching out for the church but nothing else happened.

Kinda spooked me.
