If you read the article, the coroner says Petty died of an overdose of pain medication he was on for emphysema, knee problems and a broken hip (that he had while playing concerts still.)

They keep calling it an accidental overdose as though there where on purpose kinds. If he wasn't trying to get high then they need a better term. Dude struggled with addiction for a long time call it a bad reaction to perscribed medication.

Well, it's usually just referred to as suicide, but deliberate overdose is very much a thing that happens.

My friend listens to Tom Petty satellite radio in the car with her 6 and 3-year-old. The boys sing along. When Tom Petty died and they were talking about it on the radio, the 6-year-old was upset and was starting to cry in the backseat. My friend was trying to comfort her son about Tom Petty's death.

Her son was sniffling and sobbing and asked, "Does this mean we can't listen to his music anymore?"

He was really shook up about it and a few days later he asked his mom if he could do something for Tom Petty. Here's what he did:

he said he wanted to write down Tom Petty's songs so that people wouldn't forget.

yes, the lyrics are over his head, and he even asks permission to write, or sing along, the swears.

I told her she's raising that kid right.

Thanks for reminding me that Tom is dead. I was almost in a good mood now that I'm home from work. Fark around.

It says "a variety of medications", then it says later what his ailments were, and about being prescribed fentanyl patches for those.
No need to whitewash it, they didn't.

We don't know that it was all prescribed medications.
Just sayin.

I love the part of the Facebook post where they assume news of Tom Petty's death is so shocking that the world will be stunned.  It's a tragedy, sure, and he was a musical genius, but he was no JFK, Elvis, or Buddy Holly.
/ JFK was probably the most shocking celebrity death in the past century.  Or did I forget someone bigger?

I hate Trump, and hate what Sessions is doing, but the crisis started way before Trump came into my office. My sister OD'd and died from opioids over 12 years ago. My daughter's biological dad died from nodding out while driving on opioids, thankfully by himself in a single car accident, nearly 10 years ago. Drug companies pushing opioids and doctors prescribing them en masses caused the epidemic.

It was 3 out of the 7 drugs found.

The coroner, Jonathan Lucas, said that Mr. Petty's system showed traces of the drugs fentanyl, oxycodone, temazepam, alprazolam, citalopram, acetyl fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl.

Yea, 12 years ago, when Bush was president. Coincidence? I think not. Opioids do not exist when democrats are president.

I don't think anyone is saying the problem started on their watch, but as they decided to very emphatically take up the responsibility for the problem, they can go ahead and keep taking the blame for the continuing jack-shiat being done to fix it. If they don't like that, they can borrow Obama's time machine and stop themselves from saying they're gonna nip the problem in the bud without actually having any plans, desire or ability to do so.

I couldn't read the article. I don't have an account. Thanks for the summary.

I read Tony Iommi's autobiography. He talked about how many older Rock stars suffer from bad knees and hands. Apparently touring really does take a toll on a body.

It's only a possible death sentence to old folks who are bedridden, pneumonia is the concern.

My cousin was arrested for shoplifting. She is addicted to fentanyl. She has OD'd before. Won't go to rehab. Robbed her grandparents blind. Her kids have been taken away. She has been beat up on the streets. She has skipped court for the second time and is wanted by the police. Just a matter of time.

OK, this is going to get me blasted.

Tom Petty was obviously a very talented musician.

But. I have absolutely no memory of anything he ever did that approached greatness or genius.

I searched through his greatest twenty hits:

    https://www.billboard.com/articles/list/6165346/tom-petty-top-20-billboard-hot-100-hits-heartbreakers-stevie-nicks

and the only thing I  recognized was Free Falling, which is the ultimate definition of Whiny Rock. Jebus. Absolutely Awful. I listened to a bunch in the top twenty, found nothing of interest, or even vaguely remarkable.

It's sad that he went out the way he did, but he was no rock star, by any metric, just a competent musician.

tell me I'm wrong.
link to a song by him that is not at all ordinary, one that was inspiring, or even relevant to the times.

One of the best selling groups ever.
By all accounts a great and generous guy.
He was also in the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne.
